(hat tip to Android)

Here is a video of a discussion that took place last fall about the economic crisis and how the left should respond to it. As you can see this is a very eclectic panel and I found it to be really interesting. Paul Mattick Jr speaks of the workers self-organization and the end of ideology. Mac Intosh (Internationalist Perspective) speaks of rediscovery an understanding of value. Walter Daum (League for the Revolutionary Party) speaks around themes drawn from the Transitional Thesis.

The first thing I noticed was how old Mattick and Mac Intosh are. For some reason I always expect these ultra-left theorists especially the ones that rabbit on about species-being like MI to be hip twenty somethings and they always turn out to be in their sixties. I still can't help intuitively imagining Gilles Dauve as being roughly the same age range as me even though my intellect tells me he must be at least around sixty years old by now.

Zanthorus, I always imagined Gilles Dauve as some cliche looking Anarchist dude. Then I realize he is some old French Dude haha

Although Paul Mattick looks like he is dressed by Urban Outfitters

funny on revleft the stereotype is almost completely backwards. left communists are thought of as young hipsters when the majority probably look like Mac Intosh

It was a good conference, I just went to hear Kliman destroy the underconsumptionists and then listen to PMjr, MI and Daum duke it out (although in a very comradely manner).

I think my dream panel would be to hear Dauve, any orthodox Trot, and maybe coax Camatte out of the woods and hear them tear it up.

Nice to have Kliman rip up those MR-style underconsumptionists.

Damn, I wish I could watch/hear Kliman rip up those MR underconsumptionists.

Is the verdict already out against the MR school? I haven't necessarily found anything particularly damning about Kliman's take on the MR school.

Heh, had to edit now that I see in the link I can watch Kliman. Egg on face.

I don't see what's so compelling to Marxists about MR and Sweezyism. To me it seems an economic outlook which is very revisionist, embedded in the overall practice of Third World developmentalism.

Kliman is trying to emphasize (as Marx did) that one should not locate the problem in consumption but rather in production, that's all. Baran and Sweezy didn't even get the concept of surplus right in the sense that Marx meant. They are a waste of time, don't read them.

The sound quality is so terrible that I have a hard time getting through it.

Has the MR school ever taken on Kliman's criticisms? I can't seem to find a rebuttal by them.

If you do find one, please post it. During the conference, when Kliman was basically beating Wolff (MR "rep") mercilessly, about the only thing Wolff could say was that "he reads Marx in a different way [sic]".

i think it depends, the "communization" tendency around tiqqun and the invisible committee are pretty young and hip. troploin, tc, etc are prolly made of old people
