Started in the infamous pelacin bay, finnally some attention on the mass human rights abuse that is the California prison system, that entire system is systematic torture, and now they are making demands. I hope this gets more attention.

I don't understand hunger strikes...
"I'm not going to eat dammit!"
uh, okay.
I agree with your post, though. Prisons shouldn't be a nice place to be, however. The more horrendous it is, the less people there will be who want to live on the taxpayer dime by going to prison. Isn't it generally better to address the reasons for crime in the first place, rather than attempting to deter it through terror?

Yet people have always been circulating around the prison system. Even when the torture meant whips and chains, even when people were put into horrendous torture contraptions. And more and more people keep going there and get return visits.

That's like saying:
We don't want to have kids, let's chop off my balls
But on a serious note, you can't fix crime, you can only give a reason not to commit it

Yes, you can in fact "fix" crime. Crime isn't just some random thing that occurs spontaneously, people do it for a reason and if you can find out what drives people to do it you can fix it.

or you can take away the reasons TO DO it, like desperate poverty and destruction of opportunity.

No it's more like doing the perfectly logical thing "I don't want to have kids so let's use protection." When has your way ever worked, we have 2 million people in our prison system alone, great fucking job.

In my opinion, crime exists because of laws. I guess it's obvious but I'll elaborate. If you have a state to protect private property, you are going to have laws that legitimize what the state does. In this sense, crime is nothing more than transgressing those laws that the bourgeois state puts up in order to protect the interests of capital. This even applies in extreme cases like murder, where an individual is basically considered the property of capital in the form of potential labor.
Crime, then, is simply a social construction, it is only objective in that it exists separate from any individual consciousness, but not objective in that it does not exist outside of consciousness.
