View Full Version : Strategy games (Age of Empires etc)

Did anybody else used to love these sorts of games? I did when I was 12 to about 15. I owned at AOE 2: Age of Kings. I also played Empire Earth a lot...that game deserved to be bigger than it was. I liked how you could upgrade your civilization from cavemen to dropping nukes to fucking mecs and spaceships. I liked Myth, too. Basically any game that involved extracting resources, building a big army and then hurling it at your enemies.

Thought of this topic because I'm nostalgically torrenting Starcraft right now lol

Heroes of Might and Magic III was one of my favourite games ever.

Once in Age of Empires 2, I once made a map consisting of a small player settlements and then a gigantic forest, just so I could see the forest be progressively chopped down. The 200 pop limit really bothered me all the time however; I wanted larger civilian populations.

My favorite strategy game is ethier Rise of nations or Age of empires 3, oh and fuck Microsoft for shutting down Emsemble studios :cursing:

Rise of Nations (and its expansion Thrones and Patriots) are THE SHIT. THE BEST. FUCK EVERYTHING ELSE. IF I WERE STUCK WITH ONE STRATEGY GAME IT WOULD BE RoN!

gQLvXjSUk-8

that being said.

i hate super sci-fi type hames. i like realistic historical progression. Civ III IV and V were great games.

Empire Earth was memorable. I looooooooved making maps. Especially really detailed and realistic ones. In fact, i used to be a good map maker for games like black hawk down and EE. very methodical. (to toot my own horn)

AoE II and III were awesome. i really liked AoE III but the maps got a bit tiring after they started to feel rigid and predictable online.

i have to note though, i started out with AoE II on my grandfathers laptop when we were living in his RV

i wont touch the command and conquer series with a ten foot pole though. EE III+ as well. Startcraft was ok.

Warcraft III was fun, but too cartooney sometimes.

forgot to mention. Medieval Total War had a great atmosphere for some reason. everything was just dark and dreary. Empire total war is fun too :D

Me and my friends are massive nerds for Age of Mythology and AoM Titans Expansion Pack. I'm usually Isis, but when the Atlantians came in, that was a whole different kettle of fish (to play with, and to play against). I am also a fan of the Loki rush, but I can't do it that well. Playing these kind of games online is a nightmare though, because everyone is so good; they send a massive army over when I've still only got villagers picking berries. I also played as the Japanese on my friend's AoE III.

A friend of mine tried to convince me to pick up Europa Universalis a while ago but I never got around to it. Did find a copy of Rome in a bargain bin and try playing that every once in a while, but I haven't got the hang of it yet because even as Rome I get my ass beat by barbarian neighbors long before the rise of Julius Caesar. Still fun, though.

I love empire total war for the naval battles.
Rise of legends was very nice with the wacky units (especially the vinci units)
Empire earth is great too.

Also stronghold is awesome building a castle and defending it while trying to run an economy was great i cant wait for the new one to come out.

I play few strategy games but those all the more excessively :D:
- Total War: Rome, Medieval 2 and Empire (all with expansions)
- Hearts of Iron II and Europa Universalis III (see above)
- Civilization IV
- Anno 1701; dunno how established this game is outside of Germany but it's cool!

That's my personal ranking, can't really get a final decision about the first two blocks. Preference changes back and forth between the Total War series and the Paradox games. Also played Warcraft 3 and Empire Earth 2 for some time but completely lost interest years ago.

I dunno, you check. :p RoN came at a time when I still bought some games... Perhaps we could start a usergroup or something to agree on a specific date and time for a game, since not all of us are available around the clock (or at least, I'm not ;)).

- Anno 1701; dunno how established this game is outside of Germany but it's cool!

Anno 1602 is always kind of nostalgic for me, haven't played the rest of the series though.

I've invested a ridiculous amount of time into the total war series that sometimes it makes shocked and sad, my favorite being Rome.

Also Europa Universalis III is the king of historical accuracy and a lot of fun, especially multiplayer. Hearts of iron is ok but I dont like the restrictive system of relations because it makes declaring war hard and makes the game too restrictive. Thank bog for mods.

Also if anyone isn't aware, you can play RoN and just about any other game that supports LAN over program called tunngle(http://www.tunngle.net/index.php?l=en). Me and my friend have used it for a lot of games and it works better than hamachi.

Rise of Nations was awesome. Age of Empires 2 was a really great too. Never played 3, what's it like?

Red Commissar
21st July 2011, 01:36
Back in the day I played a lot of Command and Conquer. I played the original, but then I played more Tiberian Sun and Red Alert. I still play the series today though I'm not as involved in it as I used to be.

I never really got into Warcraft 3. A lot of my friends got into it but I noticed we never actually played the game itself much, but rather DOTA or DOTA-type matches.

Recently I've played games like Company of Heroes and Dawn of War I and II. I really like those games and play them with some contacts from time to time.

I bought Men of War off steam when they were selling it along with its expansion for $5, which I find to be refreshing. It feels different from others I've played before.

I also like the HoI and Victoria series. They aren't RTS but still strategy. There are some older games I like from back in the day too, like Ground Control and Warzone 2100. I used to play a lot of World in Conflict, but not so much anymore.

I'm playing Paradox games a lot at the moment Vicky 2 I'm very good at but they ruined it with the patches, not too keen on HoI - too restrictive, EU3 I can't play until they bring out the new patch :cursing: and supreme ruler 2020 which is on sale at the moment really cheap and it's the most insanely complicated game I've ever played (it's brilliant)

I love 3. With all the expansions you can play as the main euro powers (Britain, France, Russia, Ottomans, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Netherlands) and as native American and Asian civilizations (Ming/Manchu China, India, Japan, Iroquois, Sioux and Mexica)

I'd give it a try. All the civs have their drawbacks and advantages, and all offer a unique game. The problem is I can't play online (pirated the Asian dynasties Xpack) and the AI gets easy to beat.

Rusty Shackleford
21st July 2011, 05:10
i played the hell outta 3 online.

i played as russians because of a slight slavophilia when i was younger and also mass units and if you play your cards right. INSTANT UNITS!

i fought a battle where it go to the point where my team basically funneled resources to me and i mass produced units to go straight to the front.

something around a minimum of 2000 deaths for each player. it was INTENSE. and awesome. this was a standard match mind you.

That was against an AI though. Still generally in that game even in the 100s is considered too high. I'm not sure why it ended up that way. And just to clarify, I played that game over a week, that was not in one sitting if you are curious about the time there.

It was a fun game though. I'd gotten a bit rusty (no pun intended) at it, but RS just carpet-bombed the shit out of them, we both did a decent job at keeping the seas clean (or rather, the Chinese were inept at the naval thing), and I opened two cans of ground troops to mop them up. All the while, the Chinese were nuking the hell out of me, but we had enough troops to take the game anyway.

I didn't manage to host a game, but Rusty did. So I think we're good to go for the weekend. Would be cool if we could get, say, 4 people and do some team play or something, without AIs.

Unfortunately, I was never much good at multiplayer - I learnt the basics but never got above 1650.Best thing about the norse is they generate favour through battle, and their fighting units can build stuff so they're pretty good for invading. Though their buildings are pretty weak and the armour of their fighting units is pretty poor. Oh yeah and dwarves are so cool.
I agree as regards the multiplayer. there are some serious players on there, who could play against 3 AIs on titan mode just for fun

i actually liked AoM a lot too.yeah it is my favourite RTS, for sure. I have always played it (since I was about 11ish), and I have played AOE at friend's houses, but never quite got the hang of it. only other strategy game i go on a bit is Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth-- the story mode is way better than playing with other people or just some scenario

You are thinking http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Space_Marines . These guys are indoctrinated übersoldiers who sport power armors, wield automatic rocket launchers as easily as regular dude wields rifle and they fight space demons from psychic hell, egalitarian space cows with anime mechas, genetically engineered fungus space orks who love (literally) war, S&M space elves with protonic bondage whips and hivemind space bug dinosaurs who eat planets.

Imperial Guard however are regular guys and girls doing all this with dinky laser rifles and god-sized tanks. They also have missiles which open portals to aformentioned psychic hell to eliminate entire armies.

Wow that was a crappy game on my part. I wanted to try playing China, but getting instant civvies isn't that great a benefit in the end. I played like a damp rag this time around, and I ended up on the defensive with few cities and hardly a military before long. But I felt that it was possible to get the teal team out of the way, when suddenly armageddon was caused...

Yes, it is indeed Dawn of War I. I'm not sure why I forgot to mention that. This was from sometime ago, a rather bloody and violent battle I had. I believe it was on the Winter Assault expansion. Coincidentally I was actually the Imperial Guard and my opponents were Chaos.

I have what seems to be a screenshot in my old stuff on imageshack. It doesn't show much though.

you are a god.

Only active 3D/2D artist on the team, things are very slow. Still, I do this for free because I love it... after the current Nazi crap comes more Soviet stuff which I'm seriously fired up for :thumbup1:

Has anyone ever played the Cossacks games?

They're definitely one of the best 17th-18th century strategy games I've played, especially the combat system in Cossacks 2 (and the fact that you can have an army of up to 64,000 troops is just badass).

not at all, to my experience...i've never gotten around to 64,000 troops because holy shit that's a lot, but, i use a 5 year old laptop and it runs just fine.

I planned up an extra 'reward' faction based on the NKVD, troops of higher quality with early war and prototype 'Field testing' vehicles like the T-44 through support of the RKKA. If the team accepts it, I hope to start that along with some new Red Army vehicle models after the extra German faction [Ostheer] is released, probably before the end of the year. Hopefully the faction will prove to be more fun than vanilla Soviets which as always been a little bit of a mess imo.
