Even the people who were with him admit he killed himself. It's not contentious.

Well, even if he did kill himself, the suicide was due to the coup. He feared they would've killed him anyways and I am sure they would have.

Aside from torture, the more important thing is that the suicide denied the golpistas a chance to parade him through the streets as a trophy and put him on trial to justify their coup.

I think it's pretty immaterial, he killed himself because of the coup so even if he pulled the trigger it was murder. It is good to know for sure for historical reasons, but the coup itself was more important than the exact means of Allende's death.
I also wonder what will turn up about the investigation on Pablo Neruda's death. They are also investigating allegations that he was poisoned instead of dying naturally-this is a little more contentious in some respects.

With the rifle Fidel gave him, correct? That was the original assumption and I'm glad they cleared it up. Thanks for this. I think it's safe for us to conclude that the golpistas are the primary cause for his death regardless.

Neruda is a great poet. I'll look out for news of that investigation.

It's understandable IMO as an alternative to being taken alive by the enemy who would do who knows what. That hasn't worked out well for a leader since Atahualpa.
Edit: Well, except Chavez I guess!

Amazingly enough the Korean Central News Agency (http://kcna.co.jp/index-e.htm), known for having 99.9% uninteresting articles, actually had a nice short one on this subject.
Pyongyang, July 22 (KCNA) -- It has been newly proved that Salvador Allende, ex-president of Chile, died a heroic death.
His daughter Senator Isabel Allende told a press conference on Tuesday that an examination of her father's remains confirmed that he killed himself, not murdered by the enemy, during the military coup in September 1973.
When the military attacked the presidential palace with the backing of the U.S. imperialists to keep Chile from taking the road of independence and socialism, Salvador Allende fought the enemy at the risk of his life with an automatic rifle in his hand, remaining faithful to the revolutionary principles to the last moment of his life.
His doctor also confirmed that the ex-president killed himself, not surrendering to the enemy.
In the last moment, he reportedly said, "Allende will never surrender".
He has still remained in the memory of the Korean and other progressive people all over the world as hero of the Chilean people and the world working class. His end reminds people of the heroic struggle for defending the Commune of Paris.
The scientific proof concerning his end puts a period to the unreasonable assertion about his death.
