Captain of the Hungarian nazi army, who is solely responsible for Novi Sad Raid in 1942, is, apparently, innocent.

Note that he actually was guilty, and responsible for death of my grandparents, among the 3,500 dead in Novi Sad Raid. He was tried for deaths of 30 people, although under his command were about 600 souls of my fellow citizens. He previously topped the Simon Wiesenthal Center's list of most wanted Nazis.

Hungary is a semi-nazi state to begin with. Prime minister Orban is a far-right nationalist, and the main "opposition" are genuine neo-nazi party Jobbik. Of course this is a political decision.

It's amazing how the states love their butchers...

How?

The court stated that there was insufficient evidence to indicate he was responsible for the executions, and that he was old. The prosecution was based off evidence that had convicted him in 1944 (before the Arrow Cross coup), and in 1946 under the post-war regime, though it seems that didn't count much for the case when the decision was handed down.

It may be worth mentioning though that when he finally returned in 1996 to Hungary from his long time in Argentina, the country did not take notice of him until the Wisenthall Center advanced the charges in 2006 to the government, and it was only by 2008 the government actually started moving, and only in 2010 the case was "opened".

Bandito is right though, there is a political aspect to this considering the ruling party, Fidesz, is rather nationalist and religious, and Jobbik, though a small party in parliament, has certainly been influencing actions of the government because Fidesz doesn't want to lose voters/supporters to Jobbik. There really was no interest from the government considering the current atmosphere there to continue prosecuting the case.

Also note that the Catholic Church arranged his escape from post-war Hungary, first to Austria, from where he managed to flee to Argentina.
