Google+ Enables Gender Privacy (http://slog.thestranger.com/slog/archives/2011/07/13/google-enables-gender-privacy)

Until yesterday, the only information everyone could see on every Google+ profile were your name and your gender. Last night, Google+ Profiles Product Manager Frances Haugen posted this video (https://plus.google.com/106792630639449031994/posts/5kt9TpEb77m?hl=en) announcing that soon Google users would be able to control their gender information:

In a nutshell: If you decide to make your gender private, you will be referred to in gender-neutral language (part of the example Haugen offered: If your gender is set to private, instead of "Greg added you to his Circles," Google will say "Greg added you to their Circles.") "I know this is grammatically questionable," Haugen says, saying that gender privacy is more important than being grammatically perfect.
This is a good first move on Google's part, and it's pretty mind-blowing that this is a conversation that is happening in public. It's not even conceivable that this kind of a public statement on genderqueer issues from one of the biggest corporations in the world would happen in, say, the 1980s, or even the 90s.

That's cool. I always thought it was scummy of facebook to not have a gender neutral option, and indeed other social networking sites.

That's cool, but I'm waiting for Diaspora to get me an invite. I'm not too excited about Google/Facebook monopolies on social networking...

I'm not even sure that's a grammatical error..

e.g. John sent you their friend list

sounds good to me

I wouldn't be surprised if it is becoming more grammatically sound.

'Their' is plural. Not like it matters. People never say 'his or her', at least not anymore outside the world of academics. Before long I think it will be adopted as being the official gender neutral singular term since it is used that way as it is.

Google+ Gender Stats of the Day (http://geeks.thedailywh.at/2011/07/15/google-gender-stats-of-the-day/)

Google+ Gender Stats of the Day: It appears that the early adopters of Google+ are overwhelmingly male. SocialStatistics (http://socialstatistics.com/) says 86.8% of G+ users are men, while FindPeopleOnPlus (http://findpeopleonplus.com/statistics) gives a (slightly) less unbalanced figure of 73.7%.
If those stats don’t make it obvious that Google+ isn’t a great place to find a date, this should: 95% of Google+ users who list themselves as “looking for love” are male. Unrelated(?): 60% of them are software engineers or web developers.
It’s expected that the early adopter community will be made up of a bunch of nerds, but it’s also depressing that so few of those nerds appear to be women. Ladies, it’s still early. This social network is ripe for colonization and takeover.

Facebook does have a gender-neutral option of sorts, but it's just the imperative "Select Sex." Chose that without obeying the command and you get "their" as a pronoun.
