In this week's mailing:
Korea: Stop government violence against strikers
Ivory Coast: Free jailed trade union leader
Guatemala: End the murders of human rights defenders
This week, I have to write to ask for your help to defend trade unionists on three continents.
We all have to deal sometimes with difficult employers, with the threat of being sacked, and so on. But in Korea, Ivory Coast and Guatemala our brothers and sisters are facing police attacks, jailing and even murder. These are extremely urgent cases and I appeal to you to send off your messages and to spread the word inside your union.
Korea: Stop government violence against strikers
In January this year, Kim Junsook, a 51 year old woman former welder, began an "aerial sit-in" to protest mass dismissals at her shipyard. The response of police and employers to this extraordinary months-long campaign has been violent. (See the photo above of a protesting Buddhist monk flushing liquid tear gas from his eyes.) The Korean metal workers union backed by the International Metalworkers Federation, have asked us to launch a big international campaign demanding that the government back down and respect workers' rights. Remember, Korea is vulnerable to international pressure, especially from fellow OECD countries. If we send thousands of emails, we can win this campaign. Please send off your message right now and then forward this email on:

Ivory Coast: Free jailed trade union leader
We told you a few weeks ago about the case of Basile Mahan Gahé, general secretary of the national trade union center Dignité in Ivory Coast. Basile had been kidnapped in April, his fate unknown. But we have just learned that he's been transferred to a prison in Boundiali, where he is reportedly only given one meal a day. Amnesty International says that there is credible evidence that he's been tortured. The global union federation for the food and hotel workers, IUF, has launched an online campaign - please show your support today:

Guatemala: End the murders of human rights defenders
Idar Joel Hernandez Godoy, treasurer of the central executive committee of SITRABI, the banana workers union, was gunned down in cold blood on May 26, less than two months after the murder of another of his comrades, Oscar González Vázquez. SITRABI is calling for international solidarity as they demand justice. Guatemala is now sadly the second most dangerous country in the world in which to be a trade unionist. (Colombia is the first.) According to the latest annual survey of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), 10 trade union activists were killed in Guatemala in 2010 and 10 further killings have been reported so far in 2011. Thank you!
