So, I would like to start doing some labour work, like manual labor, construction or something, how would I get into that? What about labour unions? Do I have to get in one to do such work? I don't and wouldn't mind but I'm just curious. I would also like to eventual get a trade and attend a trade school, I don't know, help me out, I need a dollar.

Connecions. Got any family/friends who do it? If it's unskilled work they aren't interested in interviewing you and looking at your education and shit. Having someone who works their already means they can vouch for you. I work for a blasting/painting company. Everyone who works there knows someone else one way or another. Very few people get taken in completely from the 'outside'. In my experience, they also find it harder to cope.

Just my experience.

Actually, I know a couple of carpenters whom I've consulted about becoming a tradesperson and what they suggested was contacting your local unions directly and finding out from them. Beyond that, Nic gives some pretty decent advice.

There are 2 main avenues for you:

1) You have no experience. So you need to know someone who can get you a job doing grunt labor. Talk to your parents, your friends parents, their friends parents, etc... and say that you want to work but you don't have any connections and perhaps they will make a call for you.

2) You have experience/trade. It doesn't seem like you do so nvm.

As for unions, there won't be any in small work outfits of 3-10 workers. These outfits are usually run by a foreman and owned by a different person who you won't see very often. You're better off with the IWW if you're in a small group, and if you're in a group which is already unionized, it's likely that you already have some sort of experience/trade.

Is this asked out of a geniune financial need, or are you just looking to be more proletarian chic? Honestly, I think you can do a lot for the labor movement outside of trade unions.
