So aside from the debate about that certain member we're not allowed to talk about, this shit got me seriously wondering what's acceptable and what's not. Can we not make sexual jokes about women, ever? I mean tbh I've seen a shit ton of sexual comments about men here (a disproportionate number about Stalin for some creepy reason) and nobody's said shit, so what makes women this sacred cow? It's like the madonna whore complex on a whole nother level where men are the collective whores and women are the madonnas (are we even allowed to say whore? is that sexist?). And what the FUCK is wrong with saying that Ayn Rand was triflin? ***** was triflin as fuck. Okay that was sexist, at least according to the rules on revleft and it was tongue and cheek so dont ban me even though a lot of you mods are probably looking for an excuse. Seriously though, Ayn Rand was triflin, idk why you guys are under the impression that that's somehow a sexist term, this is the second time the mods have pulled the sexist card against non sexist colloquial black terms so I think there is an element of the old complex of the colonizer who feels the need to save colonized women from colonized men going on here. Or just straight up ignorance but I think there's a bit of racism going on there too like "Oh I dont really know what this term means, but it sounds black so its probably sexist".

Oh and besides the thing that we're not allowed to talk about that you can read all about in the members forum, I'm also referring to the time when some mod, I think Children of the Revolution but I'm not 100, got mad at me for referring to my girlfriend as "My girl". Apparently this implies sexist dominance and possession and is not just something that people say to each other all the time.

CotR gets mad for bringing up anything involving women. It's best to just stay away from any topic concerning different sexes/genders on this forum, otherwise you're just risking a ban out of nowhere.
Also, really? That's like saying that saying "my father" implies dominance over him. I'd really love to take a look at that post.
EDIT: Reread your first post. Seriously, edit it. You're a goner already if you don't.

are we even allowed to say whore? is that sexist?I don't think we're allowed to, no. Generally, when it comes to posting on Revleft, it's best to imagine an activist hipster reading over one's posts, and if they are left shocked and dazed it's probably not a good idea to post it. Of course, I lived in Singapore for a while, so I may be more used to Revleft conditions than most.

I agree with you, I don't think the word "*****" is neccessarily sexist, context is what makes the meaning, the thing about the internet is that context is hard to gague, so I get the "better safe than sorry approach," but when you get to a point to where a man being a man is sexism, your going into rediculous territory.

Thats NOT what it is, and your being just as stupid as people that call a guy sexist for having a penis. NO one is thinking "it sounds black" other than you.
Honestly no one gives a shit that your black, we get it.
Are some of the Mods over sensitive and totally unable to take context into consideration when seeing terms? Yeah, is it because you are black? NO, no one cares that your black other than you.
But other than that I agree with you, Children of the revolution called me Ageist because I said that overall youthful looking woman are found more attractive, theres other things that cross the line over into silly and baseless accusations.

Actually, somebody else pointed that out, not me. Tbh I didnt even know it was really a black thing to say "My girl". But yeah maybe it's just a coincidence but it's just a funny thing how stereotypically black terms are immediately associated with sexism.

Yup pretty much theres a fine line between opposing bigotry and going way the fuck into political correct land.

Can someone explain to me what is exactly meant by "hipster" in the US, modern context.

wait, hebrew was banned for this? i thought he had been posting sexist stuff? im confused, a male can be triflin too, and it isnt pinning on them some sort of "feminine" characteristic either
is there no other way to show support for hebrew hammer, because i already got another infraction for criticising mods, and i dont want another or get banned

hipster is used to describe someone who has a certain way of dressing and is into certain things and supposedly likes to be "ironic". what these things are is wildly debated. i dont think what Zero called a hipster is, most activists on the left are even less cool than hipsters

Its not a black thing to say my girl, nor is it a sexist thing, and stereotypical black terms ARE NOT immediately associated with sexism, and its disingenous to make that connection.
How?
To what part are you asking How?

I'm sorry, I'm in South Asia, we use words differently here. Racist.

To add onto bailey's definition. They usually are up on all the latest underground trends and wear really new trendy clothes for a short period of time. The thing about hipsters is that they don't really exist anymore because the hipster style has become so popular. Also originally hipster was a pejorative to describe these people and they would shrug it off as a label put on them by plebeians.
Here's where things get confusing.
Let's say somebody had posted the following:
"Women are crazy with or without the porn (http://www.revleft.com/vb/showpost.php?p=2167203&postcount=4)."
"At least I acknowledge that most women are easily tempted (http://www.revleft.com/vb/showpost.php?p=2167438&postcount=46)."
"What passes for an anti-war movement in my city is old, white, female, lame, ritualistic and small (http://www.revleft.com/vb/showpost.php?p=1498128&postcount=4)."
"A pre-emptive note to the phoney feminist female chauvinists here... (http://www.revleft.com/vb/showpost.php?p=1141957&postcount=52)"
Any one of these would have been sexist - and yet, none of them were, because the actual posts were about men, not women. Social context accounts for the discrepancy in some of these cases (I've heard right-wingers complain about "female chauvinists" on occasion, for example, and the whole notion is patently ridiculous). Others, though, I'm not so sure.
And that's where things get confusing. There are a whole host of things that are okay to say about men, but aren't okay to say about women. When I read those four comments above in their original form, I had no problem with them as long as they were about men; when I read them now after switching "men" to "women" and "male" to "female," I'm already getting a little sick to my stomach.
While there are some things that are clearly always sexist, IMO (the word "*****," for example), not all things are nearly that clear-cut. There are two principled ways to go about statements like the ones above: "If it's okay to say about a man, it's okay to say about a woman"; "If it's not okay to say about a woman, it's not okay to say about a man." While I'm quite happy to see the clear-cut chauvinists punished the way they have been, some members have also been chastised or disciplined by admins in situations that hardly fall short of placing women on a pedestal.
The problem with the board's policy is that they're treating a vague notion, one with a multitude of definitions, like it's a black-and-white thing. If the board is to do so, then the board needs to provide a black-and-white definition of what it considers to be sexist, and then I personally wouldn't have a problem with it. (For what that's worth). My grievance isn't with the strictness regarding sexism in particular; I take issue, though, because it's generally hard to know in advance what the admin board will consider discipline-worthy. Any declaration on the contrary is pure partisanship, and I hope this point gets taken seriously rather than dismissed out of hand.

***** was triflin as fuck. Okay that was sexist, at least according to the rules on revleft
You are right, it is sexist, and you know it. (and since you will cry and whine about this), many others have been infracted for the word *****, including an admin, so dont go make it all about Ayn Rand, or anything else except what it is. It is what it is.
Infraction for sexist language.

Seeing this thread has brought all the defenders of casual sexism to the yard, I am going to quote the recent announcement (http://www.revleft.com/vb/announcement-sexism-homophobia-t157717/index.html) by pyscho which you can find in the members forum on this subject.
The Board Administration would like to remind everybody that we have an zero tolerance policy for all forms of prejudice and discrimination.
We are therefor very unhappy with the increase of prejudiced comments and "jokes" (mostly sexist and homophobic ones) posted on the board.
Even more worryingly is the amount of users who seem to find these kind of comments acceptable to be made on RevLeft and who protest every administrative action on the subject.
We would like there for to remind every user that we don't discriminate on this board, and that includes that there is no case of more and less acceptable prejudice even when some form are more accepted in the dominant IRL culture.
This board should be an welcome place for each and every "minority" and will continue to actively combat all forms of prejudice.
So again, and I cant believe i have to write this again, before you complain about administrative sanctions (verbals, infractions, bans) for prejudiced language or even better before you yourself post anything that could be perceived as prejudiced take the acid test; take an moment to reflect whether it would be acceptable to make an similar post about, lets say, jewish or black people.
because even when you don't, we aim to treat every form of prejudice the same way and will not waste time and energy on both those that make these kind of remarks and those that jump to the rescue of them because "its just streettalk", "but everybody on MTV says the same" or other inane reasoning like that.
Now that you all have a definition of what is acceptable and what isnt, I advise very strongly to back away from your ha ha sexist jokes. We intend to use the board's rules of infractions, suspensions and banning to the fullest on the matter.
