One of the remaining Chicago 7 goes on a hunger strike every year to try and change Cris-Tief-For Come-Rob-Us day into Native Americans day. I think this is very admirable and we should all (in the US) gather out comrades around and rally to change this holiday.

Shut up already, a stupid meaningless protest means nothing. You can not change history. Imperialism happened we can not make a time machine and go back in history and change things. Oh and by the way I am peruvian, which means I decended from the indians that died by Pizzaro during the imperialist age, so don't think that you are talking for me.

Well here it is a year later, and Columbus STILL hasn't left! When is that guy gonna take a hint??
This year there are going to be numerous INDIGENOUS DAY demonstrations October 11th 2004.
(Don't ask me for details. You're on your own there) -- so LET'S BURY THE ORIGINS OF NEW WORLD IMPERIALISM.
Symbolism is important, you know.
Here's some symbolism:

Being Peruvian does not mean you're Indian...well I dont know you personally so I dont know if you are from Indian descent.
My cousin told me that there are hardly any "pure Indian" Peruvians around...only in the mountains and the jungle, but in the cities they have mixed with the Spanish and other European cultures.

I agree. On Columbus Day, we're not reminded of the killing he mercilessly committed, but of the trial and turbulences that he bravely fought to discover America and a bunch of other bullshit.
I'm completely in favor of Native American Day. Is there an online petition or something?

I wish I knew that there was an organized North American movement for this (there is a movement, but really organized is what I don't know); but like all the rest of the Left, I'll bet this struggle is ad hoc and all over the place. You can always Google for more info -- but if all you want to do is sign an online petition (no disrespect), I'd just keep my eyes and ears open for information to come to you in the next week or so.
Talk it up to people you know too, if the opportunity comes up.

In Vancouver, obviously, we don't have a Columbus day. The major problem here is the general ingnorance towards our local history.
They recently opened a new museum called "storyeum". They tell of they early days of the pioneers and Vancouver in general. However they conveniently don't include the opium dens, they dieing native people, or the fact that the Vancouver police were originally given funding to deal with "the indian problem".

He also killed and pillaged as all viking conquerors did, but when folks mention that he was the "true discoverer" of America, it's even more ignored than Colubus's crimes.
The native Americans were the first Americans. They came here from Asia first, so why do Leif Ericson or Columbus deserve any recognition?

While i'm certainly not an expert on early scandinavian history, I have read many of the Iceladic Sagas, which are full of pillaging, but I don't recall ever reading about Leif going a 'a Viking'. What sagas are you baseing your statement on.

I'm going to protest this Friday by going to an American Indian Movement (AIM) gathering in denver, home of the first ever Columbus Day parade 99 years ago. I'll let you all know how it turned out and if the police beat the tar out of me or not.

lol why is the U.S. celebrating something that came from Spanish history, since Columbus was doing it for the Spanish?
How about celebration of "How the West was Won" in commemoration for the numerous slaughters and rapes from the east to west coast?
Maybe there will be a holiday for the day that terrorism was defeated, after millions have been deformed or killed!
Learn history to know why things happen now. Because little by little, many significant things about history have been removed by government. It's almost in connection to the burning of the Library of Alexandria, where knowledge of thousands of years was wiped out in the single spark of flame.
"What we don't know keeps the contract in line and movin'. They don't gotta burn the books they just remove 'em..."

According to a Hisory Channel documentry, Columbus' remains were exumed and they ran DNA test, which concurred that Columbus was in fact born in Spain!
But, this Saturday about 600 people marched in protest in downtown Denver. I was one of the 200 some people that tried to block the parade route (an annual tradition) We managed to delay the parade for an hour and a half, but were unsuccesful in doing so. I was arrested along with 232 other people for doing so.
Once at the jail they processed us and then let us go. It took forver though. I saw my proffesor (who is a Shawnee and the local leader of AIM) on tv. I'll be there next year to try to prevent the thing from happening again.

I stronlgy support resistance to the official history that washes over the genocide, aka, "columbus day". I agree that there should be a Native's Day.
The Spineless Democrat who thinks it doesn't matter should understand that Indians still live in terrible conditions, many reservation Indians have no prospect of a better life.
US out of North America!
