So I was wondering (as a UK resident so I have no idea in American Marxists view on the subject) what are Marxists opinions on the 4th of July celebrations? A harmless congratualory affair to commerate the defeat of the Brittish or a disgusting show of imperialism?

It's just a chance for Americans to go out to the local park and watch fireworks and eat grilled meat. Maybe take the kids to the pool and give them sparklers. I personally spent my 4th of July on this site and reading up on my Marxist history.

^This.
The 4th of July is mainly used as an excuse to fuck around with explosives, hangout with families, swim, cook, etc. Of course it's a celebration of the bourgeois revolution in 1776 but (as with most American holidays) this seems to come second before consumerism and partying, atleast as far as my family and those around me go. I'm sure other people are more partiotic and like to celebrate the independence day and America and such. Nowadays I just use it as an excuse to get way to drunk for my own good, after all, it's for Amurikkka.

It's a patriotism booster shot. Every year, we gather together, watch huge fireworks, and celebrate how much better the US is than the rest of the world.

I got drunk, fucked around with fireworks and burnt my leg in the process, swam, and ate a lot of hamburgers. It's just an excuse to light things on fire in the street without getting into trouble and getting drunk.

Most of mine came from Mexico. Although that doesn't mean they weren't made in China...
It really depends on the person. Some actually celebrate the holiday, while others just use it as an excuse to blow shit up and get wasted. I fall into the latter, and so does most of my family (we're mostly Mexicans, after all, so we don't feel much of an attachment to this date).
That said, in the mainstream sense, it can get pretty damn jingoistic. If you don't want to feel like vomiting all the burgers you just ate and use your fireworks to blow up the White House, do not watch the news or tune in to the radio on that day.
¿Que?

Aside from the burgers and the fireworks and getting messed up etc. there's also a lot of gratuitous flag waving.

I would say that the 4th of July is a great demonstration of one of America's dearest cultural values. That is, blowing shit up. We flock to movies where lots of shit gets blown up (I'm looking at you, Micheal Bay) . We blow shit up in other countries. Our national anthem is about blowing shit up. So of course we need a whole holiday dedicated to blowing shit up. It's only natural for Americans.

The only national holiday in Ireland is St.Patrick's day which is really just an international celebration of alcoholism, a good way to play down stereotypes :thumbup1:

You obviously have never seen us with firecrackers and bottle rockets and roman candles and m80s and mortars and cherrybombs and m100s.

I like to blow stuff up. I guess I'm a stereotypical 'murikan.
Anyway, I like the 4th. Americans need more holidays, not less.

I used to bear witness to drunken mortar wars on the 4th. It was simultaneously really fun and really moronic.

Yes, yes we are, and proud of it. That's one of the things about America I actually like. That's why a bunch of us watch that show Mythbusters so much. Blowing stuff up is fun. XD
