I couldn't watch the whole thing. What happens during winter time? I heard Russian winters are brutal. . . Sickening to know that there are people eating thousand dollar cans of caviar. . .then there are kids that don't even have shoes.

1:10 in that video...a passerby hands a homeless kid a McDonald's balloon. That, in all its inhumanity, is capitalism.

Just awful, capitalism is 110% to blame!!!

Sorry to spoil the dinner party, but this was in the 90s, and the Russian living standard increased dramatically since then.

I don't think you could describe it as "dramatically" anything. At best, there have been slow and marginal increases, and even then it's uneven. Life expectancy, for instance, has stayed at an abysmal level (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/feb/11/russia). Anyway, homelessness didn't get better (http://news.bbc.co.uk/cbbcnews/hi/world/newsid_2820000/2820251.stm) when the 90's ended. To quote from a 2002 report (http://www.russiajournal.com/node/11698):

Child homelessness is not totally new in Russia, but current figures are consistent with times of catastrophes caused by such natural events as earthquakes or social upheavals such as wars. Indeed, the last time this phenomenon occurred here was in the early ´20s as a result of the Civil War that followed the October Revolution.

And on edit, here's a report from 2005 (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC558316/):

Deaths from drugs in minors have also skyrocketed, by a factor of 42 compared with the 1980s. Many of the affected children live on the streets, driven out of their homes by violent alcoholic parents.

Yeah, together with the number of homeless children.

Shit... I think I just shed a mantear when I saw that child holding a sign. I only understood first word, Помогите, help.

I saw some similar cases in Leningrad. Looking at those empty eyes and tiny arms scarred by fithy needles... Fuck!

Everytime some self-proclaimed "leftist" fucker applauds the Fall... Yeah, I better not finish that sentence. I know it was pretty much inevitable result of revisionist path, but still. Fuck this system.

Does this mean they have multiplied 42 times, or that they have increased 42%?

Also, it would be hard to explain the fact that in the so-called prosperous Russia, the population has decreased from 150 to 140 million in the period since the fall of the Soviet Union until now. That is some 10 million missing people!!!!!!

Using the same logic that blames Stalin for 1932-33 famine, we might as well claim that capitalism killed 10 million people. :)

TBH I wouldt try not to use that fact , its the kind of thing that pro Putin groups like Nashi would claim about contemporary Russia.

Rather to the declining births rate, lack of decent healthcare which has caused the average mortality rate to skyrocket and to the extreme fall of average life expectancy in the first 10 years of Yeltsin's tyranny (some 6 years, IIRC). Basically, millions of people have perished due to the deterioating living conditions.

And even if we presume that majority of people have "perished" through emmigration, it still tells quite a lot about current situation and your claim that "the Russian living standard increased dramatically since then"...

People don't emmigrate from countries with dramatically increasing living standards. Quite the contrary... Belarus, for example, which has kept the old Soviet system, has more people immigrating in her than those that wish to emmigrate. That fact is quite a telling about Russian "capitalist paradise"...

I'm just trying to save you from getting embarrassed. Millions of people didn't die under Yeltsin...

All I know is that the Mafia controls a larger part of the country than the government. And that Putin is having re-education camps where thousands of these homeless kids go to, it's pretty bad. I guess Russia is just destined to have a shithole. All of the pent up anger over everything in the past 90 years is manifesting in the form of basically Russian Neo Nazis, who see Stalin as a national hero, and don't pay attention to the revolutionaries before him.
