View Full Version : Capitalism is not an option?

I once read an article (I can't find it anymore :() where the author argued that there are only four possible outcomes of history:
1) Socialism [I'm thinking it should be communism, but that's what they said]
2) Barbarism
3) Ecological Suicide
4) Nuclear Annihilation
Capitalism is not an option, because, if we don't do anything about it, we are inevitably going to get 2),3) or 4).
Is that true? And, if yes, wouldn't that be a great argument to convince someone of socialism?

which is why I always bookmark things if i Like them.
#4 is a little iffy under capitalism. Nuclear war my friend, unless you count Pakistan/India going hot or Iran nuking Israel in its hatred for Jews(which is just sick), is a thing of the past. I guess a Sino-Anglo war could happen, but won't for awhile, if it even does occur.
#3 under Capitalism is inevitable. We already raped our seas, our forests, what next?
#2-barbarism yes indeed. A lack of resources in the hopefully far future could lead to a resource war or even a series of them.
Expect China and the US to fight each other for the last drop of Oil in Anchorage, Alaska. Oh and when the nukes fly, expect the rich fuckers from corporations and government positions of high authority in society to fly their vertibirds to a oil rig off the coast of San Fransisco while the rest of us perish from FEV exposure and nuclear radiation(did i just explain the entire plot of Fallout 2?)

Well, yes. If capitalism could have a good outcome, we might not even be trying to overthrow it.
Nuclear war a thing of the past? Nahh. Considering you just wrote down half of today's conflicts which involve nuclear weapons, I'd say it's pretty damn likely.

100% true.

seems like a reasonable thought, though I think it would take capitalism forever to crumble, because it's not that rigid of a system, and can if necessary placate people to stave off the revolution (like during the Great Depression) nonetheless, resources can't last forever, and climate change could destroy agriculture which could cause serious problems for capital, though perhaps not in our lifetime...

If we didn't believe this there is a good chance far fewer of us would be socialists.
The only way in which socialism can truly take hold of the public conscious is by making it clear that socialism is not just desirable, but that it is necessary.

That's how I feel about it. It's not that socialism is just some thing that sounds cool with a bunch of hippies sitting around the campfire singing about peace and love, it's that capitalism is this sick evil system that is fucking or is going to fuck us all over. If it doesn't stop, we may destroy the entire planet or any sort of civilization. It's a leech feeding on resources and workers who are holding it up.
