BART police shoot, kill man on platform of Civic Center station

BART police shot and killed a man on the platform of the Civic Center station in San Francisco on Sunday night, shuttering the transit stop.
BART police received a call of a "wobbly drunk" on the train platform of the downtown station at 9:33 p.m., according to spokesman Linton Johnson. Two BART police officers responded at 9:45 p.m., and at 9:46 p.m. there was another call about shots being fired, he said.
It was not immediately known how many shots were fired and which of the two officers -- or if both -- had fired their weapons, according to Johnson. Johnson said there was a knife found at the scene that the man had allegedly had in his possession.
The man was transported to San Francisco General Hospital, according to witnesses who contacted The San Francisco Examiner.
The unidentified man was pronounced dead at around 10:45 p.m., according to Johnson.
Both BART and Muni service were halted at the Civic Center station, with trains passing through but not stopping, Johnson said.

Every BART police offer who patrols the agency’s trains, stations and waiting areas will soon be equipped with a Taser. BART’s board of directors voted unanimously on Thursday to purchase 130 new Tasers, an acquisition that will bring the agency’s total to 190, enough for each one of the department’s patrol officers.The vote to purchase the 130 Tasers required two-thirds approval of the BART board, a threshold easily surpassed given the approval of all nine members. The San Francisco Police Department and BART police were on the scene Sunday, and they will both be handling the criminal portion of the investigation, Johnson said.
BART will investigate whether policies and procedures were followed, Johnson said.
The transit agency recently approved Taser stun guns for all of its police officers. The decision to purchase the Tasers came in the wake of the deadly shooting of Oscar Grant at the Fruitvale Station on Jan. 1, 2009. In that case, BART police Officer Johannes Mehserle fatally shot Grant after allegedly reaching for his Taser but mistakenly pulling his gun.
