On August 12, 1992, England's tiny nuclear arsenal fell on Ireland, on
South Africa, and finally on China. Instantly the planet went up in
flames. In the first half year of what was to be called the War of '92,
half the Earth's population perished. The United States was reduced to
a vast underpeopled land -- and, to make matters worse, Texas had
seceded and taken her precious oil reserves. But Israel, virtually
untouched in a world ravaged by war, was painfully overpopulated.

you can't beat the 1980's. I have this other one where a INLA/OIRA stand-in attempted to turn Ireland into a nuclear power by nuking the queen.

This stuff died out around '92, though I have this hilarious one I picked up at a thrift store. Idaho gets taken over by neo-nazi's and its basically 200 pages of fascists getting their shit wrecked. In hilarious detail/corny prose. also a dude turns himself invisible/dodges bullets with no explanation until the end of the book. the last three pages are literally like "btw i have crazy mullet-ninjitsu and can do crazy shit."

Someone needs to write some leftist alternative history. Maybe the Union of Socialist States of America against the United Italian-Russian-Austalian Empire of the Rising Moon.
