I have the google redirect virus. How do I get rid of it? I ran both McAfee and Windows defender but neither of them can detect it. Is there another program I should download? Will the virus interfere with downloading/installing another anti-virus/spyware/malware program? Can I just manually get rid of it myself?

If I were you, I would reformat and reinstall. Disinfecting a virus is a long, laborious process that you should attempt only if you know what you're doing. You'll have to poke around in your registry with a program like hijackthis, manually removing all errant entries that might be loaded by the hijack, and then running multiple anti-viruses and malware removal tools to purge the virus and any associated programs it may have downloaded, as well as repair exes and dlls that may have been infected.

And then after the whole process is over, the repaired files might not even work. I know from experience.

The first question is how much critical stuff do you have on your hard disk, and do you have it backed up?

The second question is how do you think you got this virus in the first place?

If you really want to go through the whole song and dance with manual removal, you can check up on topics like this in the malwarebytes forum. Mind you, this particular case ended unresolved.

download Malwarebytes on a different computer.
load it on to a flashdrive/thumbdrive
turn your infected computer on in safe mode without networking.
transfer malwarebytes to your infected computer.
install
run
sit back for a while
check out the log
delete infected files
and run defrag afterwards just for that added touch of cleanliness.

ive done this a few times and it works pretty much every time.
