A Flame That Can't Be Dimmed: a Redskins tribute

Reviewed by Garry Bushell

The Redskins were one of the most vital groups to emerge from the English skinhead scene of the early eighties.

Formed by music critic X. Moore they were important for three reasons:

1) They were proudly, passionately socialist at a time when the mass media insisted that all skinheads were “Nazis”

2) Their music was marinated in the rich melodic broth of Northern soul just as much as it was driven by the energy and attitude of punk.

3) They wrote great songs that stood the test of time and lyrics that added a fresh dimension to standard skinhead laments. Not for the Redskins another set of songs about boots, braces, bunk-ups and backstreet bovver.

Best of the bunch was their second single Lean On Me, an inspirational blast of sing-along solidarity (recaptured here by the InCiters). The words are as uplifting as the driving sounds.

Listen to Bring It Down (rebooted by Maninblack) which shines a (red) light through the tired lies of establishment politicians: “You've never had so much is the cry of those who've always had much more than you and I.”

Lyrics mattered to X, or Chris Dean as I knew him.

There is no uniformity of sound on this tribute album, no herd-like compulsion to recreate the original to the nth degree. The music ranges from the slow, soulful mangling of The Power Is Yours (The Yell Leaders Meet The Grooveblaster) to the spikey arrangement of Don't Talk To Me About Whether (Eric Blowtorch & The Forces of Victory) via the poppier Kick Over The Statues (The Che Men) with its brassy hook.

Strength through diversity; all that unites these bands is a shared vision of permanent rebellion.

Pop, passion, politics.

X marked the spot, you build on it.

How can people in the US get a copy of this???

For those of you who aren't familiar with the Redskins, you should be, you are truly doing yourself a disservice if you choose not to check them out. They were one of the really great bands of their time or any time.

And if you do like the Redskins you should also checkout the Adjusters.

If there's ever "A Flame that Can't be Dimmed vol. 2" someone should cover "It Can Be Done"

A Spanish band called The Street Bolsheviks were supposed to be covering that song. But they couldn't get it recorded in time.
