I actually started listening to Latin American Folk music after I inquired about it in the revleft chatroom. I forget who turned me on to a lot of cool stuff!

Usually a friend will say listen to this or something, and if I like it I will listen to more.
I recommend Foxy Shazam

I usually look for those who share my tastes and find out what bands/artists they enjoy, or I look up lists of artists that make music of a genre I like or am interested in trying.

I have a handful of suppliers of reliable musics, and what I find on my own is often through association with what I already listen to.

I would definitely check out Deer Tick if you haven't already. Especially the song Baltimore Blues no.1. Also The Soft Pack(used to be named The Muslims) aren't that bad; checkout the song night life by The Muslims it's not that bad in my opinion.

It's usually by accident. Although I will type in youtube the genre I'm looking for and see what comes up sometimes.

Genuinely surprised at some of the responses, seeing as there's the most glaringly obvious omission here.
Does nobody go out and see live music anymore? I always thought the investigating went on from there.
I've found that the best way to find new music is to make your own.

If you like hardcore/punk music you could try Fucked Up. They are great.
As for me, with new music I always go to Pitchfork.com. They have plenty of new artists and albums you can stroll through.
I'd check out Iron & Wine, Band of Horses and The Black Angels

Searching through the music sections on Wikipedia yield a lot of lists of bands of certain genres.
