Hey guys, the name is Robert.
I'm a Historian in training as well as an amateur theologian and Biblical Critic.
I consider myself a Christian even though I understand the Christian Mythology in a non-theistic mystical sense.
I've only recently discovered my personal political leanings as I've been in University so I'm still studying Theory and haven't particularly found one Label to apply to myself.
Can't wait to get involved!

welcome aboard. I, and don't take this the wrong way, am an atheist. I just can't believe in God, the bible doesn't ring true to me.
I hail from the US of Reactionary A!

Hi there. Yeah, I'm pretty sure the majority of our members are atheists. You can discuss religion in an Opposing Ideologies subforum, but don't try to preach, 'cause the mods frown upon that.

Thanks for the welcome guys!
But I think you guys just read "Christian" and not the "I understand the Christian Mythology in a non-theistic mystical sense."
I'm an Atheist too.
There is no "God" and the Bible is a book of mythology. I just happen to have an emotional connection to it's mythology. I'm more of a Buddhist-Christian

So you consider yourself a Christian and an Atheist, and a Buddhist-Christian
Holy crap!

Welcome!
I can relate on the whole religion thing. I consider myself an Agnostic Theist, but being raised a Lutheran, I kinda have an attachment to the Christian version of things.
Enjoy your stay fine sir.

Actually I was raised a Lutheran myself. My religious education pretty much went in one ear and out the other, looking back on it I wish I had learned the bible stories better, even though I'm not a believer.
BTW There's an interesting Ernst Bloch quote, "The only good Christian is an atheist and the only good atheist is a Christian. I'm sure Robertus knows this already.
Anyway welcome!

So whats this saying? Be an atheist because you know religion is false, but act as a Christian, because you should help thy neighbor and love thy wife?
I'm a bit confused....

Greetings.
I'm new myself.
I also share an interest in the Bible as mytho-poetic literature and as a collection of texts embodying some highly interesting contradictions (including ideas which, for their time, were quite revolutionary.)

This is an example of astounding literary depth on a par with something
like
Love to faults is always blind, always is to joy inclined. Lawless, winged, and unconfined, and breaks all chains from every mind.
or
For example, if an old man dresses up in armor and helmet and goes to the battlefield, or in colorful brocade kimono, attending (his lord) at a banquet, rust is like this old figure.
Seriously, I always thought the Bible as literature view was just garbage. An unemployed fanfiction writing basement dweller can do better than that ginormous sleeping pill.

I'm a little late on this but welcome. I'm not going to hassle you about your religious beliefs because I am currently struggling with whether or not I'm a Christian.

Welcome
Oscar Wilde (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oscar_Wilde) wrote from personal experience.
“In old days men had the rack. Now they have the press. That is an improvement certainly. But still it is very bad, and wrong, and demoralizing. Somebody — was it Burke? — called journalism the fourth estate. That was true at the time no doubt. But at the present moment it is the only estate. It has eaten up the other three. The Lords Temporal say nothing, the Lords Spiritual have nothing to say, and the House of Commons has nothing to say and says it. We are dominated by Journalism.”
Well it might be a case of last in first out when it comes to the press in Britain now. The latest ‘revelations’ that News International (and other) ‘news’ agents have been freely hacking the phones, bank accounts and medical records of all the ‘great and good’ of the British realm for decades including Prime Ministers, Holm Secretaries, Royalty, I’ve not heard about the judges yet.
In the opening up of press reporting of the House of Commons in 1787 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Commons_of_Great_Britain)Edmond Burke said “there were three estates in parliament; but, in the reporters' gallery yonder, there sat a Fourth Estate more important far than they all”. Now it looks as if the press intimidation of MPs, paid out of advertising revenues from big capital has hit the skids, maybe breaking an important historical control over ‘elected members’ of the institutionally corrupt parliament. This is only the beginning of the end for this stupid useless venal and violent capitalist dictatorship.

...but it's a DRY heat...!
Actually, it's been really nice here - in the high 90's with thundershowers for the past few days (officially it got to 103). Expected to go down into the chilly upper 90's for the next few days...
We all mostly stay indoors during the day - but I was sitting outside around 3pm or so for an hour or so - was really nice in the shade...
Not like Hawaii, but we seem to like it here...!!!

Yuck heat....mid 70s to very low 80's is my heat limit. I die on those rare august days when it gets over 100. Our AC went out last year in mid august, It was around 85 at night and was like sleeping in an oven.
Can't say I dig the cold, but it seems more manageable than the heat. How cold does it get by you in the winter? Any snow?

Well - it got down to where the lows were in the TWENTYS and the highs were in the upper THIRTYS in December/January! It usually moderates to a 70's/80's high starting in September lasting until April/May (except for the "winter" period). We had a couple feet of snow that lasted over a week a couple years ago - I couldn't get into my short driveway without shoveling it out first! The snow made the palm trees all droopy. It reminded me of growing up in Buffalo!
This spring was all up and down - 60's-70's for a few days with periods of upper 90's from March thru June with real good thunderstorms! We had all our yearly rainfall last year gathered in just a week in January! Lake Mead still looks like someone forgot to clean the bathtub after using it, tho! I heard that they are now letting water from the Colorado replenish LM now instead of all of it going to replenish Lake Powell in AZ for the past few years (LP is upstream of LM).
