There have been stories of illegal chemicals being fired on the people.

One thing I noticed, if someone cares to explain, what is that exploding at 00:23 in the clip? Stun grenades of some sort?

Looks like flash bang grenades.
If i remember correctly a while ago (year?) on a demo one exploded right on a protester's foot and he almost lost it.
