View Full Version : Regarding a possible new forum game - thoughts

Since the end of the latest forum game I was thinking about doing one myself, but I thought I might do one in a different style.

Since a couple of new ones have emerged I'll probably leave it for awhile rather than overcrowd the forum, but here is the general idea:

It is January 1923, the Soviet Union has just recently been proclaimed, Lenin is still alive (just) and the Civil War is over (except for a few skirmishes in the Far East) and an international Bolshevik dominated Communist movement is starting to emerge. This is where the game begins.

The main type of playable character will be a Soviet Politburo member - so you can take up the role of playing Stalin or Trotsky or even Zinoviev or Kamenev.

In your position you will be expected to do some politicking - winning the support of your peers, party members (not-playable) and the masses as a whole. You can propose policies and vote on those presented to you by either the other Politburo members or me (if a big international event occurs I'll have to do this).

But aside from this you will have influence points to spend. With these influence points you can try to gain control of new offices, try to influence party members or the general population or try to bring foriegn Communist Parties into your ideological line (so we could have, say, the KPD in Germany being pro-Zinoviev and being staunchly opposed to a pro-Stalin PCF in France).

Different people in the Politburo will have different levels of influence points given to them to spend - the number of points you get will depend on the offices you hold, your popularity and your international recognition (from the foriegn CPs).

If you are a weaker member of the Politburo and don't feel you will be able to go it alone you might want to associate yourself with a stronger member or even a group, mabye form a United Opposition against a stronger member ...

You should also be able to do more clandestine actions, like trying to get other people in the Politburo killed - but if discovered you will be in the shit.

The aim of the game for the Politburo members is to become a dominating political force, achieve power and lead the Soviet Union and international communist movement to glory.

Since this game would seem to limit participation to just 11 people I think people could also take over foriegn CPs themselves and try to direct them to advantage.

Its still a vague idea, suggestions and thoughts on whether you would like a game like this would be appreciated. :)

That would sound like great fun but please don't open any time soon. We already have two forum games open. You should probably open it as soon as they close :)

/reserving Stalin

I'd wait until the current ones finish.

I like the idea, but I still don't have a clue how these things work..
We need to have one for communism in the far east, ie PRC, DPRK, Vietnam, Cambodia etc. I call Ho CHi Minh! :)

Too many forum games spoils the fun....

It might be nice to fix on a more historical forum game and go into detail... say revolutionary Cuba etc and limit the period a little.

I'm just going to let you all know that I have literally no idea how any of these forum games work, what the rules are, how they are to be played, and that's why I don't play. Perhaps I would if I knew how...but perhaps I wouldn't...still, at present I am unable...

Me too. They all sound very interesting but seem so complicated I get so confuddled.

Turn-based: you send your actions through PMs and do your grandstanding on the thread.
I would support this game, yet second the motion for smaller, more detailed simulations.
Dibs on Trotsky.

I learned through playing, at first I was totally like WTF do I do. This is my third game now, the first I did nothing except call for higher wages and got ignored, the second I got into how you actually play which is mainly via pm and now I'm having great fun as a theocratic nutter creating my own religion. The games are actually really simple it just looks like it's hard because you can only see what people post in the thread and miss all the negotiating and planning that goes on behind the scenes.

This relies on the assumption that one knows what these 'moves' are. I mean, if I'm sending PMs, 'my next move is the robot, followed by the moonwalk!' I feel that I won't necessarily win the game  Still, it might be good if all us n00bs make some kind of solemn vow that we'll all pop our forum game cherry in one and the same game, and then we'll all be equally oblivious to what the hey we're supposed to be doing

That sounds like a good idea, shadow, although I would recommend an...erm, mature DM

Dungeon Master. ALthough most use the more politically correct GM, or Game Master.
