View Full Version : What do you imagine you would hear at a hipster bar?

There is a small amount of bars that I like in my area. One of them is a bar that has a hipster vibe to it. I am not sure as to what a hipster is, but from what I see on the internet, the people that attend this bar are that. They are typically white, wear black a lot, and usually have lots of money but choose to live "low income".
My girlfriend (who is mostly apolitical) says she hates going there because "the people suck." She said that she can imagine someone there saying, "That's my favorite book. It was soooo good. And the best part was that my professor gave it to me as a gift." That cracked me up. I made my impersonation of someone there, "I think Kanye West's first album was really good. I have it programmed under 'my favorites' in my iPhone and listen to it every afternoon on the way to work. Too bad he sold out. He used to be really good."
What would you imagine you would hear someone at a hipster bar saying?

Nobody is. It's essentially a meaningless label that people like to generalize other people into. None of what you posted fit into any definition of hipster; sounds like you're talking about yuppies, aside from the black thing, which I have no idea where you got.

"Omgah, I liked that band first before they sold out to the corporate fat cats and became all 'pop'. Ridiculous, how dare other people enjoy what I like, this is conformist bullshit, ugh, I feel the need to vomit."

"Imma step outside for a cigarette real quick, you want one?"
or maybe
"Wanna watch my drink? I'm gonna go to the bathroom"
or maybe
"You accept cash?"
or maybe even
"Could you spot me a few bucks? I wanna put a song on"
Take it from someone who lives a few subway stops from "The Hipster Capital of the World", everybody and nobody is a hipster, the word doesn't mean shit.

If you stumble into a bar full of plaid, argyle, skinny jeans, beards, lots of girls with glasses, everyone's drinking PBR and people talking about how much Radiohead and The Arcade Fire are the greatest things EVAR, you might have actually stumbled into a hipster bar. T-shirts of cancelled TV shows and (ironically worn) heavy metal bands are also a good indication. Kanye? Not so much.
EDIT: Now that I think of it, you wouldn't actually have to go inside. If there are a crapton of fixed geared bicycles parked out front, chances are there's hipsters in there.

Maybe the ones near you, but there's a ton of hipsters out near me and as many conversations as I've had with them about music, not one has ever said anything about Kanye. Same for the ones I knew when I was in Austin.

yes but a lot of it is not the "nerd metal" people think when talking about metal. a lot of it is thrash, black metal, etc. also a lot of grindcore.
