Let's make copays for birth control a thing of the past

June 2011

ACT NOW

Sign on for No-Cost Birth Control

Something big could happen for women: an end to copays for birth control.

Covering birth control at no cost means that women won't have to choose between paying bills and skipping a month or two of their contraception.

But we haven't crossed the finish line yet. Sign our petition today in support of no-cost birth control.

If anti-choice extremists in Congress have their way, rape and incest survivors who pay for abortion care with their own funds could be subjected to an audit by the Internal Revenue Service to prove that they were actually assaulted.

If that weren't shocking enough, the number of anti-choice bills that NARAL Pro-Choice America is tracking this year in state legislatures has increased from 175 in 2010 to an astounding 469.

Choice is under attack from all sides. We must fight against the War on Women in Congress and in the states with everything we've got. We need your help more than ever. Please make an urgent gift today.

HALL OF FAME AND HALL OF SHAME

FAME: Pro-Choice Governors from Minnesota, New Hampshire, and North Carolina

In the states, one person can be the firewall against extreme anti-choice attacks becoming law: your governor. This month, three governors stepped up stop anti-choice attacks. We applaud Gov. Dayton of Minnesota, Gov. Lynch of New Hampshire, and Gov. Perdue of North Carolina for vetoing anti-choice bills this month. While Gov. Lynch's veto was overridden by the state's overwhelmingly anti-choice legislature, we're proud to have a pro-choice ally who's not afraid to stand up for a woman's right to choose.

SHAME: Susan B. Anthony List

The Susan B. Anthony List, an anti-choice group, has its list of demands, and most of the Republican presidential candidates have pledged to obey. You won't believe what these candidates have pledged to deliver – and you won't find this analysis anywhere else.

CHOICE IN THE NEWS

Huffington Post: Nancy Keenan explains our new Facebook tool for no-cost birth control.

NAACP stands up to anti-choice billboards targeting the African-American community.

NARAL Pro-Choice America calls out Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) for attacking rural women's access to abortion.

House tries to reinstate the D.C. abortion ban.

What's a tax on tanning salons got to do with choice? Ask 24 members of Congress.

Dear Chris,

"On the road again" has been my mantra these last few weeks.

I met with NARAL Pro-Choice America members in Chicago and Minneapolis. We talked about politics, the reasons we're pro-choice, and what it's going to take to end the War on Women. I heard one thing over and over again: our folks want us to continue calling out anti-choice lawmakers for their terrible votes. You've got it!

Even with the War on Women raging, there are signs of hope.

You might be able to leave your credit card at home the next time you pick up your birth-control prescription. Thanks to the health-care-reform law, birth control may be covered at no cost. That means no more copays.

How would this impact your life? Glad you asked. Head over to Facebook to try our new application. It will calculate the amount you will save over your lifetime if we can make no-cost birth control a reality (and be sure to sign our petition!).

Thanks for your support and happy early Fourth of July.

My best,
Nancy Keenan
