FREEDOM FLOTILLA II PRESS STATEMENT

27 June 2011

GAZA, WE ARE COMING

Despite pressure and threats of violence, flotilla will sail

[Athens] On Saturday, 25 June, the French boat, Dignity / Karama, left the port of l’ile Rousse in Corsica, France, to meet up with at least nine other vessels sailing to Gaza to challenge Israel’s illegal blockade. Israel’s best efforts to stop our boats at port, including pressure on governments, threats against insurance and communications companies, intimidation of human rights defenders, frivolous lawsuits and other underhanded tactics, have thus far failed. The Freedom Flotilla has set sail.

In the coming days the rest of the vessels in the flotilla, two cargo ships and seven other passenger boats, will leave from various ports to a meeting point in international waters from which the boats will sail all together towards Gaza. We will carry nearly three thousand tons of aid and hundreds of civilians from dozens of countries, including members of parliament, politicians, writers, artists, journalists and sports figures, as well as representatives of indigenous peoples and various faith groups.

Unfortunately some of our vessels are facing delays admittedly initiated by bogus complaints from the Israel Law Center, attempted sabotage of some boats, as well as administrative obstacles created by the Greek government in response to Israeli pressure. We call upon the Greek government not to become complicit in Israel’s illegal actions by succumbing to this pressure, and to join France in standing unopposed to the flotilla.

There is no question that Israel’s near hermetic closure of the Gaza Strip is illegal; this has been affirmed again and again by numerous international human rights bodies including the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross. And, when prompted by the flotilla effort, international consensus has been unequivocal in the demand for the Israeli siege to end. There is no question that Israel’s closure policy has had a devastating effect on the occupied people of Gaza. This has also been well documented. The only question is why does the international community of states allow Israel to keep violating the law and rights of the Palestinian people with impunity?

Recent steps taken by Israel to address the concerns raised in the public eye by the Freedom Flotilla II – Stay Human initiative, including last week’s announcement of authorization for construction materials for 1,200 homes and 18 schools in Gaza, prove that flotillas work. However, this is not enough, as our effort is not simply about increasing humanitarian aid to Gaza. It is about freedom for Palestinians in Gaza and the rest of the occupied Palestinian territories. Calls by some world leaders for flotilla organizers to use “established channels” to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza show a fundamental disregard for Palestinian human rights. The Palestinian people do not want handouts from the international community; rather they demand liberation – a call we must all support.

Therefore, despite intimidation, pressure, and threats of violence from the Israeli government, which is not ashamed to boast that it will use snipers and attack dogs against unarmed civilians, we will sail. We are part of a growing movement, led by Palestinian civil society campaigning for their freedom, that Israel’s strong-arm tactics cannot stop. We call on our governments to do their utmost to protect their citizens as we take to the sea, without weapons, protection or threat of force, in defense of freedom, human rights, and the rule of law. Gaza, we are coming.

For those who aren't aware the first Flotilla was boarded in international waters by the IDF who shot dead 9 aid workers and injured many others, alot of which was caught on camera. The Israeli media painted the aid workers as terrorists and printed doctored images and video as well as planting weapons.

Any live cameras or news feeds would be greatly appreciated.

Socialist Party and United Left Alliance MEP Paul Murphy will be on the MV Saoirse and has a blog http://www.paulmurphymep.eu/gaza/ if anyone is interested.

Due to bogus legal disturbances and appearently sabotage the launch has been delayed but hopefully for only a few days, i wish the activists the best of luck and hope they can deliver the aid without disturbance(not bloody likely) and can highlight the horrendous conditions under which the Palestinian people are forced to live.

Apparently Israel have already accused the flotilla of carrying chemical weapons (lol), this is just going to end bad AGAIN. Then after 1 week of outrage everything will be back to normal, it's a sad world.

I just looked up the chemical weapons thing and wow just wow.

According to the information obtained by the IDF, some of the participants have prepared sacks with sulfur, which they plan to pour on the soldiers as they board the vessels.
“This is a chemical weapon, and if poured on a soldier it can paralyze him,” an IDF source told The Jerusalem Post Monday night. “If the sulfur is then lit on fire, the soldier will light up like a torch.”

I wasn't aware the IDF knew so much about sulfur i thought their expertise was white phosphorous..

It's just part of the propaganda war, happened last time aswell, throw enough mud and some of it will stick, just goes to show that the IDF and imperialist media are worried about this.

Take Action:
U.S. Boat to Gaza Stopped From Sailing

Dear Chris,

Above: U.S. Boat participants in the Athens port waving signs and U.S. flags. Click to enlarge and see more pictures.

A few hours ago, we found out from activists in our member group U.S. Boat to Gaza that the Greek coast guard has prevented the U.S.-flagged ship The Audacity of Hope from sailing to the Israeli-occupied and -blockaded Palestinian Gaza Strip as part of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla II--"Stay Human."

Currently, the ship is returning to port and we need your help today and throughout this holiday weekend to put pressure on Greece and the United States to allow the U.S. Boat to Gaza to sail and fulfill its mission of delivering thousands of letters of solidarity from the United States to the people of Gaza.

Here's how you can help:

1. We urge you to immediately contact the Greek Embassy in Washington, DC, by phone at 202-939-1300 and by fax at 202-939-1324. You can find contact information for your nearest Greek consulate here. Tell them to let The Audacity of Hope leave Athens safely and sail to Gaza.

2. Call the State Department at 202-647-6575 and demand that it retract its June 24 statement that the flotilla and the U.S. Boat to Gaza are "irresponsible and provocative actions."

Demand that the United States stop threatening U.S. citizens acting peacefully to break Israel's illegal and immoral blockade of Gaza that their actions "could violate U.S. civil and criminal statutes and could lead to fines and incarceration."

Demand that the United States ensures safe passage for the flotilla and that it ends U.S. support for Israel’s illegal blockade of the Gaza Strip.

3. Take to the streets this holiday weekend to be visible and to educate our fellow citizens that as we celebrate our freedom, the United States is supporting Israel in denying freedom to Palestinians. We've just prepared this downloadable flyer about the Gaza Freedom Flotilla II and U.S. support for Israel's illegal blockade of the Gaza Strip.

Download, copy, and distribute the flyer at your community's 4th of July celebrations and throughout the holiday weekend.

4. Find emergency actions or events near you on the website of the U.S. Boat to Gaza. Add your action or event to the calendar by sending it to [email protected]

Thank you for taking action to change U.S. policy to support Palestinian freedom this 4th of July holiday weekend, and stay tuned for updates by visiting ustogaza.org

In solidarity,

US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation

Dear Chris,

Bradley Manning's attorney reports that his "overall mood and demeanor has improved greatly" since his move to Ft. Leavenworth. He can now meet with his defense team and receives regular visits. He also "wishes to extend his sincere appreciation for those who have taken the time to send along their thoughts and well wishes." (Details on writing to him are here.) This improvement has everything to do with the international outcry against his treatment at Quantico, which was widely condemned as inhumane. The demand to Free Bradley Manning must grow and spread.

This year's Pride Parade in Chicago was another record breaker, which made it all the more important that our Free Bradley Manning Contingent was part of it. Initiated by the Gay Liberation Network, the contingent included World Can't Wait, Code Pink, South Siders for Peace, Stop F.B.I. Repression, Vietnam Veterans Against the War and others. The face of Bradley Manning and his story got out very widely, with thousands of flyers grabbed up by crowds lining the street. World Can't Wait marched with the "Hands Off Wikileaks, Prosecute War Criminals - Not Julian Assange" banner (left), and the GLN truck featured an enormous 20 foot banner that read "Free Bradley Manning - Gay Alleged Wikileaker." Full reports from Bradley Manning contingents in the Pride Parades in Chicago, San Francisco and New York are here.

Overall the energy from the crowd was very positive. One VVAW activist who has marched in DC and at many anti-war actions around the country said, "I definitely never received such strong and positive a response/reception by spectators. It was a great feeling of support I never felt before. REAL nice change of pace from what I've been used to." We also know that Bradley Manning's story and what it all means in the larger context of these expanding U.S. wars and occupations needs to get out more broadly. So the newly coalesced Chicago Bradley Manning support network will be marching in three local parades over the July 4th weekend. Please lend your support if you're at the Hyde Park or Oak Park parades on July 4!

Committee to Stop FBI Repression: "We Salute the Gaza Flotilla"

By Staff

Fight Back News Service is circulating the following statement from the Committee to Stop FBI Repression.

The Committee to Stop FBI Repression stands in solidarity with the activists of the Gaza flotilla ships and the people of Palestine. As Americans, we denounce the U.S. government’s support for the Israeli blockade on Gaza and demand that Palestinians get access to the food, water, medical supplies and building materials they need for their daily lives. We denounce the U.S., Greek, and Israeli sabotage and blocking of the flotilla taking the much-needed humanitarian aid to Gaza.

We are particularly outraged by U.S. State Department statements that regard the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza as some sort of crime — equivalent to "conspiring to deliver material support" to Hamas. The expanding criminalization of humanitarian aid means the U.S. government is threatening arrests, trials, and lengthy prison sentences for Americans on board the solidarity boat named, “The Audacity of Hope”. The Gaza flotilla is an incredibly brave act of international solidarity, not a criminal act punishable by the United States. The real criminals are the elected and government officials working to keep badly needed supplies out of Gaza!

We oppose the U.S. government repression of humanitarian aid. The U.S. State Department and the U.S. Department of Justice cannot be allowed to silence solidarity with Palestine. We know of this repression firsthand. On September 24th last year, FBI agents raided the homes of anti-war and international solidarity activists in Minneapolis and Chicago as well as the Minnesota Anti-War Committee office. U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald issued 14 subpoenas in Minneapolis, Illinois, and Michigan. Fitzgerald ordered the 14 activists to appear before a federal grand jury, claiming to investigate material support for terrorism. The number of activists subpoenaed to date has grown to 23, and one of the common threads is the activists’ solidarity work with Palestine.

The repression is intensifying too, as we see with the related case of anti-war and Chicano leader Carlos Montes in Los Angeles. Carlos, raided by the FBI political police on May 17, plead “Not Guilty” to charges this week. Carlos Montes was named in the Anti-War Committee subpoena in Minneapolis because of his role in protesting the 2008 Republican National Convention where Palestine was prominent. On July 6, Carlos Montes said outside court, "This attack on me is a pretext. They are using it to attack me because of my political activity — denouncing U.S. intervention in Colombia, in Afghanistan, in Iraq, and in Palestine."

We ask our supporters to salute the Gaza flotilla participants from 22 countries, including the 37 American passengers, and to support the next steps being organized by the USTOGAZA. We ask our supporters to join with voices across the country to demand that humanitarian aid to Palestine not to be considered “material support for terrorism” and to continue to support efforts like the Gaza flotilla so that we can continue to express solidarity with the people of Palestine.

International solidarity is NOT a Crime!
