I've always been obsessed with the Golden Age of Piracy. Marcus Rediker, a Marxist/left wing historian, has wrote several great books that are must read about the social conditions that created piracy, as well as the egalitarian, rebellious and communalistic culture of the Caribbean/Atlantic pirates between 1715-1726. Here is a lecture (sorry comrades it is 48 minutes long) but if you listen to about 10 minutes of it you'll get a pretty interesting idea of what Rediker is saying. Rediker doesn't romanticize the pirates in my opinion, but he does give a refreshing Marxist or "People's History" analysis of this period of history that I personally have been interested in my whole life. Its a period of history that we should look at just like the Spartacus uprising, etc.
