Anyone else a fan of these books/films? I am currently almost finished with book 2, and am loving every second of them. While they are not strictly leftist, the author had left-leaning tendencies and was interested in social justice issues, and they show sometimes.

I find the main character, Lisbeth Salander, fascinating. Wayyyyyyyy cooler then James Bond.

I think he had more than "left leaning tendencies."

"Larsson was initially a political activist for the Kommunistiska Arbetareförbundet (Communist Workers League)... In politics he was the editor of the Swedish Trotskyist journal Fjärde internationalen, journal of the Swedish section of the Fourth International. He also wrote regularly for the weekly Internationalen.... Larsson spent part of 1977 in Eritrea, training a squad of female Eritrean People's Liberation Front guerrillas in the use of grenade launchers." - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stieg_Larsson#Activist_and_journalist

The books are fantastic i'd recommend them to everyone. As was said Stieg Larsson was a communist which i thought really shined through in his portrayal of strong independent women in alot of the major roles and writing Lisbeth as bisexual, both of which are aspects of character which i find to be severally missing in the majority of books.

Wow, didn't know that about him. Thanks for the info. I thought he was just a run of the mill democratic socialist, certainly a "leftist" in the U.S, but more mainstream in Sweden.

Thanks for the info.

Shame the man died, I guess he had plans for like 10 books or something

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't Larsson's books printed posthumously? IIRC, he passed away while they were still somewhere in the pre-publication phase. To me, that might be the saddest bit of all.

He died in 2004, so they were published posthumously

The Americans are remaking the movies......
Which is unnecessary in my view. The movies are pretty good!

i've finished books 1-2 now, and watched the first two movies.

They were good, the casting was great, but I feel they left out to much of the more...........controversial points he seemed to be trying to make about misogyny, homophobia, the state etc.

I haven't read the books yet. Much to my shame. They are on my list.

I don't get what the thing is with those books and people liking them. I found them to be extraordinarily boring and uninteresting, not to mention unable to at all make me think this was at all possible and realistic, apart from the stuff about there being a secret collaboration of former and present security police with fascistic tendencies, that I can buy, but the rest was really tacky and generic, and the inclusion of random celebrity (Paulo Roberto) as a somewhat major character kind of added to that feel. I also don't think the writing is anything special at all, it's really quite bad at times.
