I was into UFOs and the like as a child. Had big books on them and stuff, but I grew out of it when I was about 11.

Two completely different things you're talking about I think.

X-Files is fiction (though I knew a bloke who swore it was based on the 'real' FBI paranormal files). It's a drama that uses sci-fi plot elements. It's precisely as relevant as Star Trek, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings or Dracula. You can use the fictional elements in a way that combines story-telling with social critique or indeed re-inforcement of the dominant ideology (Independence Day, I'm looking at you), or you can just go 'funny aliens, blow shit up'. But it's not real. They are stories.

All those UFO Investigation things are also not real but crucially they pretend (or sometimes are made by people who believe) that they are real. They are at best the products of deluded people, and at worst they are lies. I don't believe that they have any reason to exist other than to entrap the gullible. Total shit, all of them.

That sums up my opinions on the two things you're talking about.

EDIT: Damn. I went at this through the the 'latest posts' list and didn't realise it was Chit-Chat, though it was in 'Cultural'. What I really mean is 'you're all barstards and not as clever as me yah boo'.

Sure, I used to watch X-Files back in the day.

I think it's unintentional or intentional propaganda most of the time.

I just said the other day that I refuse to watch another Spielberg produced Sci Fi tv series, where they cast the US Military in the role of Saviours.

He gets all uppity about a Nazi Comment from Megan Fox, but Afghanistan/Iraq are just fine with him.

Spielberg loves the Alien/UFO theme.

It's not that 'Aliens' are possibly real, it's just that all those films paint the USA and the USA military as Humanities Saviour.

I too like ancient astronaut theory but don't believe all of it,while Erich Von Dunican is convincing in some places like Latin America case, but in some places his theory attracts skepticism

Anyways I believe in aliens but I am neither a blind believer nor an arch skeptic, my favourite UFO show is "UFO Hunters" and my favourite guy is Pat Uskert

Watch this video from UFO Hunters contains interview of two physicists

Yah well said !

If aliens ever invade earth the American military will pe*e in their pant because the aliens will be far far ahead than any one can dream. The movie independence day was such a joke , Willi Smith actually flew a saucer that was way way ahead than ours ! cmon give me a break ! and that nerdy guy planted virus in alien computer ! this is so stupid ! alien computers would be so advanced that they are can't be hacked by any earthling nerd !

Yah ! History Channel is cool when it comes to aliens !

The place where, I live I have seen Philosophers,Physicist,Engineers believe in aliens. Surprisingly people in medical profession are so skeptical when it comes to aliens.I think the docs think that people who believe in aliens are crackpots.

Numbers of ufo believers are increasing this days !

Not really, no.

But the old "War of the Worlds" TV series was pretty cool.

The movie "Paul" is a riot.

Btw, real UFOs look fake. Just like the fake ones on the cover of The National Enquirer.
I don't "believe" in UFOs but have seen a couple. Odd.

Surprisingly, Super 8 (produced by Spielberg, but directed by J. J. Abrams) actually portrays the US Military rather negatively. Very negatively, in fact. Although the police is treated much better instead, so...

I sometimes watch those shows, if only because they've become so prevalent on many channels. It seems like the History Channel has become nothing but this at times. I find them rather annoying, though, since they always act like they've stumbled onto some new earth-shattering evidence but end so indecisively. And you always see those fringe radio hosts drawing strange and sweeping conclusions about the pyramids. I wonder if one day (perhaps just before the last week of December 2012) they'll just drop the other shoe and say Nostradamus was actually an alien predicting an alien invasion by the resurrected Hitler taking place on December 21, 2012.

The nearest star to us other than our own is 4.2 light years away, which is about 25 trillion miles away. Also, it's a red dwarf star so could probably not even sustain life in its habitable zone. So if there is intelligent alien life - and the probability is overwhelmingly in favour of this being the case - it must live even further away than that, so the probability that it has ever reached Earth is pretty much zero, or so close to zero that it's negligible.

I have no doubt that some people really do see weird unexplained shit flying about, but whatever it is, it isn't aliens.

Your explanation is based on a limited understanding of physics. You could also bend space-time itself to get anywhere, you know. General relativity offers this possibility.
