I always for past week, have been feeling very down and kind of upset. But only when it is dark outside. Anyone else feel this way?

Yeah, I think it's something about all the isolation and quiet, especially late at night. I get insomnia from it sometimes because when I lay down to go to sleep, all I'm left with are my thoughts... Which suck, lol.

This is the way it always is for me. All the unpleasant thoughts I have surface when it starts getting late.

Yeah, I share this tendency to fall prey to bouts of depression in the later hours of the day as well. When my mind is allowed the freedom provided by night to dwell on some of the darker and more depressing aspects of my existence, it usually takes great liberty with it.

I actually feel the reverse. Especially because I am the only one in the house right now (but if there were other folks here, it would still be this quiet anyway) it is very peaceful. I find it very calming to chill out in my room, smoke, listen to some music and look at the stars and night when everything has wound down in the evening. (Edit: my whole family just got back as I was writing; it is not so quiet anymore.)
Anyway, I guess some people prefer being on their own (I am probably one of those), and I sometimes find it stifling when there are so many others in the house. And I guess in the day you are always doing stuff so there is no time to contemplate, but because nothing happens at night that is all I do. I usually find reflecting on the day gives me a sense of reassurance and security. It seems I deviate from others here, because no-one else seems to like it at night. Personally, it is my favourite time because it is chilled and silent. Although, I did hear that--sorry to end the post on a bum-note--in countries in Scandinavia etc., where there is nights without any day (think that's right?), there are higher incidents of depression and even higher suicide rates. (Maybe that is a bit spurious though, my memory for facts isn't great.)
I often find the dark quite intimate, because it is so still you can hear every drip and creak; the night has its own little quiet rhythm in a way. But maybe if no-one else likes the dark then my reflections aren't that helpful I guess

Do you typically use substances at night? Many times, when people use drugs at night, they're body adjusts to that by creating an opposite-like reaction to the drug when the cues are given (e.g. night time, location, people, etc.). If you've been drinking hard or something else and cut it off fast, you can be feeling a psychological withdrawal.
If not, try making a journal and write down what you're thinking and doing when you start to feel this way. After a while, you could look for patterns and factors that may not necessarily be the night time.

I love the aesthetics of night a good deal for all of those reasons, but it still doesn't reduce the tendency of my mind to wander into areas which I would almost prefer it not. As much as I enjoy the atmosphere of the night, it still doesn't reduce the opportunity which the time provides to thought. I believe that these two aspects of this time can exist separate of one another, though.

All the time man, it's a late summer night and I'm thinking "what the fuck am I doing with my life?"
In fact, could someone give me a song to match this type of mood some of us are feeling in this thread?

I know we have had our musical disagreements in the past, but this is the song I usually associate with this sort of atmosphere. I used to go for late night walks around my town listening to this album on a regular basis last summer, so I sort of associate this state of mind to it. I always thought that it had a strong 'fuck everything' type of theme to it.

Cool song, I'll probably add it to my playlist for this mood. However, I was thinking more of something that I would walk around town late at night but instead of a "fuck everything" theme a "everything in my life is fucking hopeless" theme.

Stay away from the north in the winter then, night 24 hours a day is bad.
I also think there are statistical indications that winter/longer nights increases the number of depressions.

I am the exact opposite, I actually feel better when it's night time then I do during the day. Usually, I'm always in a disagreeable, irritated, miserable, pissy mood but most especially when it's all sunny out, the birds are chirping, children are laughing, etc. Some old bullshit (yeah, I really am that big of a 'hater').

I love the darker hours just as I love the darker seasons, I guess its a personal thing. Lying in bed at night with your thoughts can be a great thing, as can seeing the world at night time.

Listen to music / watch TV / read a book until you are too sleepy to carry on, and all will be well.

I love the night, it's so peaceful and relaxing. Maybe you could keep yourself occupied with things you like.
Pick up a book, listen to some good music, fucking dance, whatever...
