I've head before that the PNG government is basically run by mining and oil companies, but this was still surprising:


PAPUA New Guinea's Prime Minister, Sir Michael Somare, has accused Australian mining giant Rio Tinto and its subsidiary Bougainville Copper Limited (BCL) of being behind the PNG military's bloody suppression of Bougainville rebels opposed to the company's Panguna copper mine.

awesome documentary about the revolutionary struggle of Bougainville:

I watched that doc and it was very interesting. Then did a little research (ok, Wikipedia :p) and found out that the main revolutionary in that doc (Francis Ono) later declared himself King. :o

It is unclear whether his successor continues to control substantial areas in the island, but he never recognised the deal made with the Papua New Guinea government to create an autonomous province (in the 2005 elections only 3% of the people took part!).

Just some interesting things to think about. :p

The doc makes the 'eco-revolution' as it called it once or twice seem very interesting. There are so many communities in the Third World that suffer terribly under the influence of foriegn capital in exactly the same way as this.
