Let the battle begin. Although I don't think The Wire would've been possible without The Sopranos, in my opinion it's not even up for discussion that The Wire is superior. Every single line of dialogue in every scene is important and perfectly constructed.
This thread will probably contain spoilers.

The Wire wins hands down. Sure, the Sopranos has its moments but its just a TV show. The Wire is so much more than that.

I can't put into words my love for the Sopranos it took up 8 years of my life but the Wire is the best TV show ever made. When they showed it over here they put an episode on every night with no breaks in between series fucking brilliant.
btw Could you tell that McNulty and Stringer were English and Carcetti was Irish? To me their accents sounded amazingly good.

There should be an option in the poll for 'I've only seen one of them' because I can only think that the people who voted Sopranos have never seen The Wire...

sopranos.
the wire is good, but some stuff in it got a little boring e.g. the white mayor/politics bit and the newspaper company
i know their trying to show how these institutions all play together in crime, but found it A LITTLE bit boring
great characters in both, but overall the Sopranos had better characters IMO, although Snoop, Omar and Bodie were pretty amazing characters

Here's why I voted for The Wire:
1. I liked the characters in the Sopranos, but I didn't give a shit when any of them died. The Wire actually made me sad after pretty much all the major character deaths, as well as other character developments, Michael in particular.
2. The Wire's ending was way more satisfying. I'm not hating on The Sopranos' sort of Inception-style ending, I thought it was clever, but also a little cheap, and the end sequence in The Wire was just perfect.
3. The Sopranos was more about great moments, which it had a lot of; I think my favorite might be when Junior was watching Curb Your Enthusiasm with Bobby. I'd also say The Sopranos had a lot of padding and unnecessarily slow scenes, whereas, again, everything about The Wire is important.
4. In my opinion, although The Sopranos is more about how things change, while The Wire is more about how things stay the same; I'd argue that The Sopranos was basically a right-wing show, whereas The Wire was fundamentally socialist. The Wire incites a desire for change, whereas The Sopranos basically says that things will (gradually) get (marginally) better on their own.

I've seen both, though not every single episode of The Wire... Voted Sopranos.

Has anyone ever read David Simon's books - Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets and The Corner? Both fantastic reads which are damning portrayals of US drug policy and social policy.

The last series of the wire was really disappointing though. The whole thing just seemed really Hollywood by the end.

I didn't think it was just for the money. It was more about him putting his principles over political considerations.

Nah. Boardwalk Empire had its merits, but it didn't quite have the same thrill as The Sopranos.
And of course The Wire is so far beyond either of them it's hardly worth mentioning.
Everybody's favourite Wire seasons? Mine goes 4 > 2 > 1 > 3 > 5. Best theme is definitely the Blind Boys of Alabama one (I think that's #1..?) and the Baltimore Boys Choir one is also really good for season 4, kinda haunting too. If you love The Wire then you should definitely read The Corner and Homicide by David Simon/Ed Burns.
Also, has anyone seen David Simon's 7-episode TV series 'Generation Kill', about a team of recon Marines in the invasion of Iraq? As with The Wire it doesn't try to cast the judgement itself, but simply depict reality as close as can possibly be done and let others make a judgement. It is fucking fantastic, although really difficult to watch at times, highly recommend it.

mine would go 4>1>3>2 and 5 was so shit it doesn't even make the list. Best theme was 1 worst was 5. I've not seen generation kill but I do have the Corner on DVD.

BE has only had one season, so the two are hardly comparable, but i was hooked from episode 1. Steve Buscemi really shows what he's made of as an actor, and one of my favourite scousers, Stephen Graham, is great as Al Capone. If anyone's not seen it, they should downl... i mean, buy the boxset. Highly entertaining.

It's fucking Martin Scorcese. Everything about it is so much better than the Sopranos, and it only shows signs of getting better.
Breaking Bad motherfuckers, July 17th! Yeahhhhh buddy
