View Full Version : Vegans, would you eat cloned meat?

Since the latest post (http://www.revleft.com/vb/meat-made-out-t156972/index.html) on meat alternatives produced (so far) a result of half being in favor (if it either tasted good and/or if they were unaware of how it was made) and half being absolutely disgusted by it, I thought I'd ask fellow vegans/vegetarians: would you be willing to go back to eating meat if said meat was made, not by "real" (I put it in quotations because the term itself is simplistic) animals, but by cloned parts of animals?

You wouldn't be harming any animal, since you never cloned a whole animal. The only portion that would be cloned would be what's sold to stores and/or restaurants. As a dedicated vegan, it would definitely make me consider the possibility of going back to eating meat, but I would also like for it to be a bit healthier than regular meat. But that's just me. I'd still consider it.

How about everyone else?

I met a vegetarian who said that if meat could be "grown" then they would eat it...
They were also vegetarian because of a materialist (not moaral) standpoint, if that's relevant...

I've though about it but I'm not really sure. Maybe I would eat organic cloned chicken but not red meat

I'm not a vegan but i can speculate that some still wouldn't eat it. Some don't like the taste, some do it for health reasons, others for moral reasons. The first two in that category may still refuse while the ethical vegan may still oppose it on moral grounds, where cloning calls into question morality and whether this still constitutes exploitation of animals.

Well, through cloning, there's also the possibility of making it healthier than normal through the lab. That's where I'd stand: on health.

It's an interesting idea to find safe SANE ways of creating food (as opposed to making meat from feces) in a way that could increase the availability of food for all. Kind of like on Star Trek where they just ask for a food and the computer creates it. What is food, but a collection of atoms, molecules and elements...if it is the same as a food on the atomic level, it is, for all purposes, the same food.

Is this a taste preference?

I think you mean lab grown meat. "Cloned meat" may be confused for meat from cloned animals which are still living animals. Since cloned animals are more likely to suffer health issues this would not be a preferable option.

Apparently, lab grown meat will be ready for mass consumption in a few years.

There are still concerns, such as maintaining a clean production environment for the meat, and whether it is truly healthy to be eating something like this.

No way, meat is meat whether or not it has been cloned.

Sooo...you're a vegan because of health then, I presume?

You should, meat is so tasty.

Problem, Vegans?

Health yeah, plus environmental reasons. The concept of eating flesh is just gross in general.

I have no ethical problems with the idea of eating meat that isn't from a dead animal (say, grown in a lab), but I really appreciate and enjoy my diet as it is, so I probably wouldn't eat it often if I did decide to eat it at all. I was never a fan of meat anyway though. I'm sure some vegetarians would be much more enthusiastic about it.

I would try it, and if i enjoyed it yes i would continue eating it, not sure if i would enjoy it though due to the association with a being, i would feel the same way about cloned human flesh.
