Anyone know of any left-wing themed anime? Maoist Rebel giving a Marxist analysis of DBZ doesn't make it one. :D

Seriously though I'm curious I've only really watched the more well known stuff like DBZ, Akira, Trigun, Fullmetal Alchemist etc.

Thanks!

Scar from Fullmetal Alchemist was a terrorist resisting imperialism, which is sadly one of the most politically conscious things I've seen from anime (albeit I haven't watched a whole lot).

Code Geass supposedly has some anti-nationalist themes iirc, and Miyazaki is an ex-Marxist and still slightly sympathetic to socialism I believe. He's a feminist, and most of the main characters in his movies are female.

Indeed, Miyazaki has some leftist undertones in his films. Black Lagoon may be of interest. It isn't really leftist, but it has characters formerly involved in left wing movements like FARC and the JRA. It actually hates on the FARC as being drug smugglers a bit. I feel like their is some leftist influence in the world view the manga/anime take though.

It's a bit obscure, and not explicitly socialist (though interestingly the protagonists have a society without seemingly the existence of private ownership of the means of production), but Crest/Banner of the Stars has a rather strong anti-imperialist message if you interpret it that way.

Although it's not exactly leftist-themed, First Squad(Пе́рвый отря́д) is a Russian anime set in the Soviet Union during WWII with the Nazis and the Soviets battling using occult forces. It's fun as far as action movies go, but not exactly a provoker of deep thought. You can watch it on youtube with english subs.

Also, Code Geass socialist? IMHO I think not. Although Lelouch is fighting for equal rights for the Japanese, the extent of this is to seize power himself. Even during the United States of Japan period, there does not appear to be any sort of political representation, and the ruler/delegate of Japan is installed merely because they are the last of the previous ruling family. Not to mention that the Empress of China is shown as the only person fit to rule it, the United Federation of Nations is totally cool with monarchies in its membership, there's only two main characters that aren't royalty of some sort, and the complete lack of political consideration beyond nationalism and a couple of mentions of "noblesse oblige."
