View Full Version : Is Hip Hop banned in North Korea?
bailey_187

and if it is, how do our posters who uphold the DPRK while being "hip hop heads" feel about this? Is it just a simple mistake of the leadership? Is there any real reason u feel justifies it?
And if it is not, which MC do they like the most?

wouldn't surprise me, what the fuck isn't banned in nk? that's a better question
Dr Mindbender

I don't think it would be banned since its fairly impossible for average NK citizens to get access to western style music in the first place. There is no internet access as we would understand it for ordinary people (the 'internet' in the DPRK is essentially a national 'intranet' controlled by the state), all foreign radio signals are blocked and electronic storage devices carried by foreigners probably dont get past customs.

As you can see on YT, there have been a couple of pop performers from the south visiting, audience reactions have been a bit awkward IMHO. Here's Shinhwa (I heard them referred to as Hip Hop, but I guess you have to be a tween to believe that):

The only music North Korea allows is that factory-processed commercial corporate shit and they expect me to believe that it's still a socialist state?

To be fair, no one in the audience looks like they're enjoying that crap. Especially not the woman at 3:10.

Anyone with a good reason why this shouldn't be moved to Chit-Chat?
Because bailey posted a serious question -- it's not his fault that most have chosen to respond to it in a humorous yet non-constructive manner. Moving it to chit chat would pretty much solidify this thread's current path toward becoming a total joke. Keeping it here or, better yet, moving it to Politics or wherever it was initially posted would help to ensure that at least some people respond constructively to the legitimate question bailey asked.
Why was this thread even moved here in the first place? If "hip hop" was replaced with "Wikipedia" or "Facebook", I doubt the mods would have moved it to the Website subforum.

Agreed. Wanting to get back to the ORIGINAL question, SHOULD hip-hop be allowed in NK? (It is not allowed.) What is the point of hip-hop, or music of any kind? To give relief from the bs of life?
Honestly, the average North Korean wouldn't give a shit. They don't know what hip-hop is and could care less. Music is a coping mechanism, an outlet, a privilege. But if you don't about it, it doesn't matter.

I would assume that Rap would be banned in north korea as well as anything else from the west. The Vice Guide to North Korea (also on YT) shows western music available in a library and on a karaoke machine. It was a guided tour though, so I think the karaoke setup was specifically for foreign guests.

No, of course it shouldn't be allowed....
What is the point of hip-hop, or music of any kind?
There's no universal or intrinsic purpose, but generally as a means of expression, communication, entertainment, fun (OH NO!)
Honestly, the average North Korean wouldn't give a shit.
Exactly how far up your ass is your head?
They don't know what hip-hop is and could care less.
That's amazing, you mean to say you have the ability to know how millions of people would react to something to which they've never been exposed? If so, what's a genius like you doing hanging around on some dumpy internet forum? Even more so, I guess the fact that they could care less (btw, it's couldn't care less) about hip-hop means that it should just be banned. I mean, why waste the airwaves?
Music is a coping mechanism, an outlet, a privilege.
Yeah, it's all bourgeois decadence, which is why music is only made and listened to by the upper classes

I appreciate you correcting me. Being a douche doesn't make you appear smarter however. I don't remember this being a scientific poll and I stand by my opinion (thought that was a given) of them not giving a shit.

1. You have absolutely no basis upon which to say that every North Korean doesn't give a shit that they can't listen to hip hop
2. Even if that was the case (which it can be assumed is not given that it is impossible for you to back up your claims), that is no argument for the state disallowing the population from exposure to an artform.
I've read some silly shit on this site, but this takes it. Nice work.
Did you really miss the sarcasm in that one? You're the one who said music is a privilege...

They have state issued radios with 3? pre-programed channels to listen to. There is a tamper evident sticker on the radio case that is inspected regularly to make certain DPRK citizens are not opening up their radios and tuning/modifying them to South Korean channels. If they do, punishment is allegedly a holiday in a labor/re-education camp.
So I can confidently say yes, hip-hop is non existent in NK.
Their TVs are similar. 2 channels, 3 on sundays, all pre-programmed to state run broadcasts and the sets have tamper evident stickers on them.

So if you didn't feel you were trying to discuss something "proper" (judging by the OP), why are you getting all cranky about it being moved?
Not that I really give a shit in general, to be perfectly clear. I don't usually read your threads because it's usually pretty vapid bullshit. That doesn't mean that I have anything against you or rejoice at your threads being moved and you totally flipping a shit at the mods (ok it's a little funny). Just curious though.

Actually, IIRC, NK is really big on music. Creepy music mostly, but I've heard some really good stuff. They don't have much in the way of new instruments, but they produce some really talented singers/whatevers.
Also, I have to say I absolutely hate those leftists that treat pretty much everything as if it's a decadent "privilege".
