Hanes and Target Linked to Sexual Abuse in Classic Factory in Jordan

DATE: June 24, 2011
FROM: Charlie Kernaghan
RE: Hanes and Target Linked to Sexual Abuse in Classic Factory in Jordan

Please help.

Young women guest workers from Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are being repeatedly sexually abused at the Classic Group of factories in Jordan while sewing Hanes “C9” clothing for women and men, which is sold exclusively at Target.

There is no man or woman in the United States who would knowingly purchase garments made by poor women from the developing world who were sexually abused and beaten.

Read the testimony of “Nazma”—a young woman raped at the Classic factory, and you will understand what has been going on for years at Classic.

Let’s start with Hanes. Here’s their number: 336-519-8080 and say “Investor Relations” to be transferred to the Investor Relations Department. Please call and ask them to move aggressively to remove the accused rapist Anil Santha and to make sure no young woman is every again abused in the Classic factory.

Please also ask your friends and colleagues to contact Hanes and sign the joint letter to Wal-Mart—which we will CC to Hanes and Target.

Ask Target, Macy's and Hanes to Stop Profiting from Rape of Factory Workers

Institute’s campaign in collaboration with Change.org

Sexual assault and rape are a far too common part of life for the women working at Classic Factory in Jordan, making clothes for Target, Hanes, Macy's, and other companies. For years, the female workers have been filing rape complaints against three of the managers, but the managers have not been fired. Now, the situation is getting direr—women who have dared to speak out against the rapes are being threatened, tortured, and held in prison-like conditions. Target, Hanes, and Macy's have the power to stop these rapes by insisting the managers accused of repeated assaults be fired.

That's why today, consumers around the world who care about women's safety and basic human rights are leaving messages on Target, Hanes, and Macy's Facebook walls, asking them to threaten to pull their business from Classic Factory unless the rapist managers are fired and an independent third party is allowed to ensure the safety of the workers. To join them and fight for the rights of women workers, copy and paste one of the suggested messages below or write one of your own. Write on their Facebook walls or post it as a comment.

Target's Facebook wall: Target, did you know the women who make your clothing at the Classic Factory in Jordan are being repeatedly raped by their managers? Please keep your workers safe by agreeing to pull your business from Classic Factory unless the rapist managers are fired and an independent third party is brought in to ensure worker safety.

Hanes's Facebook wall: Hanes, did you know the women who make your clothing at the Classic Factory in Jordan are being repeatedly raped by their managers? Please keep your workers safe by agreeing to pull your business from Classic Factory unless the rapist managers are fired and an independent third party is brought in to ensure worker safety.

Macy's Facebook wall: Macy's, did you know the women who make your clothing at the Classic Factory in Jordan are being repeatedly raped by their managers? Please keep your workers safe by agreeing to pull your business from Classic Factory unless the rapist managers are fired and an independent third party is brought in to ensure worker safety.

Economic pressure from these companies may be the only way to protect the women of Classic Factory—they are mostly young immigrant workers in a male-dominated, corrupt country. But pressure from the companies who sue Classic can help ensure no more managers are raping their workers.

Please, participate in this Facebook rally and sign this petition on Change.org, asking the companies to pull their business from Classic unless the managers are fired.
