So here's what I'm thinking. I love travelling, and I've always thought it would be cool to drift from place to place. I also love driving, something about the feeling of power that you get when you're maneuvering a mechanical beast about the open road. Tonight, while coming back from my cousins house on the interstate, I thought, Truck Driver. I think it might be the perfect profession for me, but at the same time it's like, transporting goods for some big corporation, a lot of which could be obtained locally, or something. But it would still technically be working class, since I wouldn't be profiting from the goods produced, but from delivering these goods from one place to another. What does RevLeft think?
Also if anyone else has similar desires perhaps we could be like one of those truck driving teams, where one person drives and the other person sleeps or something, I dunno.
EDIT: If I did become a truck driver I would listen to this song on my first job

There's a certain amount of romance to it, but probably like owning a Brazilian cattle ranch or a quaint bed and breakfast in the Himalayas it's actually a crazy rough life.
If you can get hired by a company to drive for them and then join a union it's really no more of a cappie job than working in any other private sector job, but most truckers now at least in north america are independent contractors who are really squeezed by brokers. I have a cousin who works in the business and he tells me how given the strict time requirements and the marginal pay, most truckers actually leave the business saddled with considerable loans for their rig. viz. the team thing sometimes they have husband and wife teams and that makes it manageable for starting truckers, but the attrition rate is huge because most truckers can't turn a profit anymore unless they were grandfathered in and have a network of substantial contacts - it's ironically more social than it would seem.
Having said that, there are certainly people who pull it off so you should really start by getting to know someone who already drives a truck for a living and seems to be doing ok, have them show you the ropes.

Be like the truckers in Convoy. Don't actually haul anything, just drive around with other truckers and fuck with cops.
