I guess Mao didn't industrialize China, fight imperialism, improve the lives of billions and create a socialist society. If only he would have adhered to dogma, then he would have been a great man. He needed to spend more time developing his ideology, he should have just given up to the KMT and continued fighting when he was sure that he could create the ideal socialist society.
