Twelve animal rights and environmental activists have been arrested in Spain and are being labeled eco-terrorists. Little information is available about this developing story right now, but some of the activists have worked with Igualdad Animal (http://www.igualdadanimal.org/) on open rescues, walking into factory farms where animals were being abused, documenting the animal welfare violations, and then rescuing some of the animals.

Some news outlets are reporting that the activists are alleged to have ties to the Animal Liberation Front. However, Javier Moreno, a spokesperson for the above-ground group Igualdad Anima (http://www.publico.es/espana/383328/detenidos-12-miembros-del-movimiento-animalista)l (and one of those arrested), says his group has been targeted because the government hasnt been able to actually catch the pople committing ALF crimes. He called the attack on Igualdad Animal open-rescue activists an attempt to criminalize animal rights movement and said the eco-terrorism rhetoric is part of a continued campaign against all aspects of the animal rights movement.

lol, first of all, the ALF isn't some centralized group. So those trying to make ties between these activists and the ALF will be a tough one. haha Second of all, these people seem to be a bit more disciplined than the ALF. Those who consider themselves ALF always seem to release all animals, no matter whether or not they were actually abused. Whereas, for these activists, they do cross-referencing, getting their facts straight, and if any are found to be abused, then they release them. To me, that's pretty cool! :)

These "animal rescues" - what did they involve exactly? Did they involve the safe and comfortable transportation of the animals concerned to better quarters? Or was it just a case of throw the gates and open and "BE FREE animulz lol!"?

Yeah, that's the only thing I've come to disagree with groups like the ALF, because they simply release them, thinking they'll live a better life. Fact of the matter is that, although they'd be freed from the abuse, they'd have to survive in conditions not suitable to them because they've spent most, if not of the entirety, of their lives in those labs. If they really cared for the abused, they'd release them but also take them somewhere where they'd be better taken care of.

ALF take a hypocritical stance when it comes to that, IMO.

The real question is, who is going to rescue pet humans from their AI masters in the future?

Good point, but that's only one of many differing situations animals are put through. Some of which are in no way in correlation with the one you've described here.

I've heard that in a lot of cases involving cutting fences surrounding farm enclosures, the animals just kinda stand around. That must be very disappointing for their liberators.

I would say being a well-cared for pet is better than both, but yes I agree with your statement.

I think it is unavoidable that humans have to kill animals for food at present (though this may change in the future with better technology), but I don't agree with killing animals for anything else other than basic food and really necessary medical research (there aren't actually many of these) Killing animals for research into cosmetics, fur coats and leather handbags is really pointless and barbaric.

Even when animals are killed for food, there should be certain welfare standards to ensure minimum suffering.
