ANNOUNCING PALESTINIAN MOVEMENT ASSEMBLIES AND COMMUNITY MEETINGS TOWARDS DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL REPRESENTATION

DEMAND DIRECT ELECTIONS TO THE PALESTINE NATIONAL COUNCIL

The campaign calling for Palestinian democratic representation is currently underway. In addition to actions at PLO embassies, hunger strikes, sit-ins, vigils, and marches, community meetings have been held in London, Rome, the camps and towns in Lebanon and Palestine, and elsewhere in the Arab world, Europe and Latin America.

US Palestinian Community Network, along with Palestinian organizations across the United States, are coordinating a National Calendar of Palestinian Movement Assemblies on Towards Democratic National Representation.

Palestinian Movement Assemblies are the first crucial step in mobilizing and building our collective voice for our national demand to determine the direction of our movement for liberation and return. They are rooted in the principle that our movement gains legitimacy and direction from Palestinian communities themselves.

Assemblies are nationally coordinated, yet locally organized and facilitated. They will be participatory and democratic, open to all political orientations, and all community members and organizations. We will listen to each other, and discuss collectively our demand for national democratic representation, in the spirit of national rejuvenation—best exemplified in the uprisings all over the Arab world.

Palestinian Movement Assemblies will be held throughout the summer and autumn as part of an ongoing national campaign that will echo demands from Palestinians across the shatat and in the homeland.

Cities will continue to be added as they are confirmed. If you would like to organize or coordinate a meeting in your community, please contact USPCN [[email protected]] for support and facilitation.

US Palestinian Community Network (USPCN) is a grassroots community network with over twenty democratically-elected chapters. The network affirms the right of Palestinians in the Shatat (exile) to participate fully in shaping our destiny. USPCN is anchored in the following points of unity:

- Self-determination and equality for the Palestinian people;

- The right of all Palestinian refugees to return to their original homes, lands, properties and villages (an inalienable right supported by international law and UN Resolution 194);

- Ending Zionist occupation and colonization of Palestine.

USPCN is an arena and platform for Palestinian communities to come together, coordinate, refine strategies, link efforts, plan united actions, and inform one another and the community about their work for Palestine.

Take Action: Support the Freedom Riders

Dear Chris,

As the Gaza Freedom Flotilla II, "Stay Human," is preparing to set sail this month, it's more important than ever to ensure its safe passage and prepare to take emergency action if Israel follows through with its threats of using attack dogs and other violent--potentially life-threatening--means to intercept the boats, as was done in the past.

Please join us for a conference call this Thursday, June 23, with Leslie Cagan, organizer for the U.S. Boat to Gaza, and Laila El-Haddad, author of Gaza Mom, to talk about actions we can take to support the Freedom Flotilla.

Laila will brief participants on the political and humanitarian developments in Gaza, including the changing situation with Egypt at the Rafah border. Leslie will update participants about the flotilla and lay out concrete ways for people to prepare and spring into action once it sets sail.

Chris, please RSVP here to participate in the flotilla response organizing call this Thursday, June 23, at 6:00 pm Pacific / 9:00 pm Eastern.

Last week the courageous passengers of the U.S. Boat to Gaza, "The Audacity of Hope," sent this letter to President Obama demanding that the U.S. government ensure safe passage for the unarmed passengers:

We need to keep the pressure on! Please sign this letter to President Obama to support the right of The Audacity of Hope to safe passage.

You can read the flotilla passengers' biographies here and hear their reasons for going on the U.S. Boat here.

The situation in Gaza remains dire. Just last week, Chris Gunness, spokesperson for the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), reported here that Palestinians in the Gaza Strip live under an Israeli blockade that "deliberately impoverishes ... and condemns hundreds of thousands of potentially productive people to a life of destitution."

The U.S. Boat to Gaza organizing committee is urging people around the country to plan now for emergency response actions. The power of such actions will be determined by the number and geographic spread of participants. If you haven't already, it's time to start planning!

Let's keep the pressure on by signing this letter to President Obama and preparing to act together and quickly to support the courageous freedom riders in their journey to break the siege of Gaza.

Hoping to talk with you Thursday, Chris!

Thank Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for Slam-Dunking Israeli Apartheid!

http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=vcWp7gYVisgXCfk6GL7SkP5En7l3pWN9

Dear Chris,

Two months ago, YNet News reported that legendary basketball star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was planning to visit Israel in coordination with the Israeli Foreign Ministry and the Israeli Consulate of New York. NBA Sporting News reported that Abdul-Jabbar would be competing for the "Spirit of Freedom Award" at the Jerusalem Film Festival.

In private correspondence, the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation has confirmed that the former Los Angeles Lakers star has decided not to visit Israel due to concerns arising "after the Nakba Day violence." This year's commemoration of the Nakba, left 12 unarmed Palestinians dead after Israeli forces opened fire on refugees attempting to exercise their internationally recognized right of return.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, thank you for calling Israel's foul! Israeli cultural institutions like the Jerusalem Film Festival are used cynically to brand Israel as a beacon of cultural and technological progress, diverting attention away from its occupation and apartheid policies. For this reason, cultural boycott of Israel is a key component of the growing Palestinian-led movement for boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) against Israel until it complies with international law. You can read the Palestinian guidelines for cultural boycott here.

100 organizations signed a thank-you letter to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, urging him to hold fast to his decision not to lend his good name or an air of legitimacy to Israeli human rights violations. In addition to the US Campaign, signatories include the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel, Boycott! Supporting the Palestinian BDS Call from Within (Israel), the Organization for Black Struggle, six Islamic-American organizations, four Jewish organizations, fourteen campus groups, and dozens of other US Campaign member organizations.

The letter points out to Abdul-Jabbar:

Your film, "On the Shoulders of Giants," documents the policies of segregation and racism that characterized the world of basketball in the 1930s. Ironically, the majority of Muslim and Christian Palestinians could not even have attended such a screening because they are excluded from entering Jerusalem on the basis of their ethnicity and religion.

Meg Ryan and Dustin Hoffman similarly declined an invitation to the Jerusalem Film Festival last year following the deadly attacks on the first Gaza Freedom Flotilla. The second Freedom Flotilla is set to sail to Gaza this month.

Chris, join 100 organizations in showing support for Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's decision and urging him to consider the Palestinian call for BDS!
