Not gay myself but against discrimination in any form. If you don't know allowing gay marriage is up for vote in NY state. And the reactionaries are active

"If this passes, we will become Sodom and Gomorrah," said 80-year-old Ginny Winn, of Delmar in Albany County.
"It's against God, it's against the Holy Torah. It will have a terrible influence on children and it will destroy all humanity," said Rabbi Yoel Loeb of Brookyn.

ugh

and some idiot who was on the NY Giants Superbowl winning team a few years back

Former New York Giants player David Tyree was among the celebrities on both sides of the issue. He said in Albany on Monday that God may have given him the ability to make his stunning, one-handed catch to help the Giants win the Super Bowl in 2007 so he would have a platform to oppose gay marriage today.
"I am not a political person, but gay marriage isn't a political issue," he said. "This not about right and left, but about right and wrong."
Beyond stupid. How exactly is anyone hurt by allowing gay people to marry. Not like anyone is going to force a heterosexual to marry someone of the same sex.
Also, notice those against it use the same arguments those who were against interracial marriage used from the 50s-70s? ie that people will try to marry their pets, or incest will be allowed or adults will be allowed to marry children, etc.
Not that I'd expect it here, at least from anyone non-restricted but many other sites I'd expect to be accused of being gay myself for this, like a 4th grader might do.

It's pretty fucking despicable. But that's the way it is, isn't it? Reactionaries get all up in arms but sooner or later they'll come down. Gay rights have come a long way, attitudes towards sexual orientation and gender identity have become much more positive. But its the rallies like these that makes a violent revolution against these reactionaries sound all the more pleasing.

Sometimes I think leftists don't really speak out against right-wing religious fundamentalist ideas enough.

Do you feel in this way in the public at large or within the leftist camp?

David Tyree needs a little more history considering he's black Ie. Blacks used to be considers less than human and couldn't intermarry by religious standards.

If I were you I wouldn't be so fucking afraid. I'm a trans-girl who would probably receive even more prejudice than a bi-sexual like you. But it's better to die as who you are than to live as who you are not.

This is the kind of thing you can expect from a lot of religious people because they're so used to hugging their Bibles/Qurans/Torahs that anything which isn't written in their little book is scary and threatening to them. Homosexuality doesn't pose a threat to them, that's just their cover up; it's actually the other way round. I can't even laugh at these saddos any more because it's beyond ridiculous, so pissing them off in return is a better laugh:

Maybe they're scared of having too much of a good time. :p

I don't think that's very sensitive nor very accurate, because not everyone is so very daring and upfront; and when faced with threats of death, most people will do almost anything to stay alive, unless they are suicidal. I for one would rather live without the condescending glances and incessantly pointing fingers...

Well, as the other thread pointed out it passed.

That's true for most people, but revolutionaries should become fearless of death, and there is a fundamental difference between being fearless of death and being suicidal. If one is merely suicidal one does not need another person to do the job, it would be easier just to do it yourself, and there are relatively painless ways to do it too, like sleeping pills.

Socialists cannot be afraid to die.

I'm not afraid to die. On the other hand, I'm pretty damn scared of being tortured to death, passing away slowly and in pains, staying alive but crippled physically, etc. etc. I'm sure this applies for most people, and that's why saying "do not be afraid of death" is pretty much meaningless.

Re: thread, this is hardly surprising anymore, but this line seriously cracked me up:

Even torture is not impossible for someone to be fearless of.

In ancient China there was a general who was tortured to death by a method called "death by a thousand cuts" - the method was probably the most brutal of all the methods of torture in all the ancient civilisations of our world. (It makes burning people to death on a stake or cruxification or cutting out one's heart using a stone knife look like child's play...)

Essentially a very sharp knife is used to cut up the person alive (who is tied to and bound to a pole), piece by piece, cut by cut. Usually it would take more than a thousand cuts before the person actually dies. The entire process is designed specifically to provide the maximum amount of suffering possible to the victim. Yet History records that this general was fearless to the very end.

However, to be frank all of this is beside the point. I would be lying if I actually said I'm totally fearless of death and torture. Fact is, for most people, it is very difficult to have complete control over our emotions anyway. The best we can do is simply to control how we act, despite these emotions of fear etc.

So no I'm not completely fearless, but I won't denounce my belief in LGBT rights even if I'm literally threatened with death or torture. Obviously I will be afraid, that's not something I can completely control. But what I can control is the fact that I won't betray my own principles.

But I certainly won't just be sitting around passively waiting to be killed or tortured anyway. I would rather torture and kill my opponent first.

This. I'm openly gay and frankly, pretty damn flamboyant. Anyone who doesn't like it can just learn to deal with it. I'm much happier now that I'm out.
