Let me tell you a story. I visited the Kentucky Creation Museum back when I was about 12 with my family. The people there...they were so blind and fanatical that even my religious parents were skeptical(knowing them, that's saying a lot). A friend of ours droned on and on about how what a miracle it was that God originally made the dinosaurs not have sharp teeth, presumably because they along with all the other animals did not eat meat, instead they only consumed plant life. Deeper into the
tour, I recall the museum had an atheist book on display. The cover showed a smiling man, with the title something along the lines of Why I became an Atheist.
That got our friend on a crusade against atheism, who proceeded to drone on and on about how amoral atheists are, like they knew better. I do recall they said Evan All Mighty was the best movie of the year because it was about Noah's Ark, so for me that jettisoned any shred of authority I once felt that they had. Finally, by the time we reached the end of that horrid tour, I was exhausted and just wanted to go home. Even at the age of 12, I could quite clearly see the idiocy of blind faith.
Blind faith is all around me. I live in a very religious household wherein my parents are so fanatical, especially my mother, that any new ideas or theories are rejected outright. They especially aren't to fond of Marxism for no other reason then that they grew up during the Cold War, and were told all their lives that Communism is evil. Hence blind faith, only of a different nature(ie government propaganda).
To give another example, let's take my discussion on Israel and the recent developments there. As you know, things have really gotten started there, what with the Palestinians trying to get their land back and all. With Egyptian backing coupled with strong anti-Israeli sentiment, hopes are high that a Palestinian state can be created. Hell, even Obama is beginning to accept the inevitable.
When I suggested that the land be given back to the Palestinian people, I was accused of hating 'God's Chosen People', and was told that how can I say such a thing, when God promised the land would go to the Jewish people? I responded by mentioning the atrocities committed there and how Israel has abused the Palestinian people for generations. Again I got the same reply: God promised them the land, so therefore although they stole the land, it was still destined to happen so therefore They deserve to horde, rather then share the land.
The discussion was over from then on. I just can't understand why so many people on this Earth are so keen to revel in blind faith. Another story if I may? In middle school I had a science teacher who was a Christian, nothing wrong with that. But, he would inject religion into his lesson plans, which last time I checked could get you fired. When talking about Medal's peas, he said that the scientific community was wrong to reject his theory(which was later proven correct by future scientists), arguing that his beliefs were why they were reluctant to adopt it. Nothing wrong with that, just stating his opinion. Then I remember that he proceeded to show us the trailer for Expelled. I later rented the movie, watched it, and guess what, it sucked.
There is a lot wrong with convincing me to rent a bad movie. But there is even more wrong with attempting to hoist your beliefs on a class of uncaring students, one of which I remember was an atheist. This teacher was so blind that he assumed everyone in his class were Christians, and that we would protect ourselves from atheism, 'which the school will try to force on you' Again, why so serious? Middle School students don't give a shit about religion, nor do they want to be forced to be religious by someone else.
Enough with the ranting. As you can see blind faith is problematic for me, and quite possibly you. As a firm believer in Materialism, I can tell you that I wont be converted anytime soon. How can I believe in a God when the only source that supposedly proves his existence is the bible, which was written by men? Men are fallible. For all I know God could be just a figment of some ancient man's head, but I guess I can't prove that either. As Shakespeare once said: Fuck it. I could care less.
