From Yahoo news:

A passenger plane had a lucky escape after South Korean troops fired at it thinking it was a North Korean military jet.
Two marine corps soldiers spotted the plane - owned by a South Korean airline - flying close to the sea border with North Korea at 4am Friday morning.

The soldiers, both said to be 18, fired their rifles at the low-flying jet for 10 minutes but luckily the plane was out of their gun range.
The Asiana Airlines flight from China, carrying 119 passengers and crew, was making its descent to Incheon Airport in Seoul at the time.

The soldiers believed the plane was flying outside the normal flight path but the airline said the plane never veered of course.
An Asiana Airlines official said: "We checked yesterday through the air force and the airport control centre to make sure there were no abnormalities such as being off course."

According to local reports, marine corps officers will now undergo thorough training on identifying civilian aircraft.

Tension remains high between the two Korean countries, still technically at war as the 1950-53 Korean War ended in a truce rather than a peace treaty.
The North bombed the South Korean island of Yeonpyeong recently after the South test-fired shells into disputed waters.
North Korea was also believed responsibilie for the sinking of a South Korean warship in March 2010 which was hit by a torpedo.

'Marine corps officers will now undergo thorough training on identifying civilian aircraft.'

 I'm glad they're taking the need for further training into consideration, however you wouldn't want the South Koreans to accidently mistake one of their own Military Aircraft and fire upon it on accident with an Anti-Aircraft weapon would you? Now that would just be a tragedy...

Honestly this has to be the case, how do you fire upon a Civilian Airliner and not realize that it is a Civilian Airliner?

What this also reveals, interestingly enough, is the now known fact of how ill-prepared SKorean troops really are, despite vast amounts of funding going into the nation's military.

They were apparently taken aback so much that they were unaware the 99 shots fired from their rifles came nowhere near to hitting the passenger plane. If this was an actual NKorean jet, as was first assumed, it's pretty clear who would've made the first, effective blow in the continuing Korean War.

This also comes out after just recently finding out, from Chosun Ilbo of all news sources, that NKorea's developed a hovercraft base, containing around 130 newly constructed hovercrafts, which would be able to launch an attack "a mere 30 to 40 minutes," comparing to previous 4 hour gap between starting their bases and then actually launching an attack.

It also states that, "they could land on the islands before South Korean attack aircraft or helicopters that would be scrambled from their inland bases."

It's interesting because both these articles destroy two myths:

1) that NKorea only attains old soviet weaponry/military supply; and
2) that NKorea's military is inadequate to successfully launch an attack compared to that of SKorea's military.

If anything, the 2nd myth is ass-backwards!

Awesome! Let's hope the war breaks out into open hostilities again, killing thousands or even millions of people in Korea so that you can root for your favorite side from your home in the United States. Internationalism!

You're a fucking moron if you think that's what I meant. I support for peace and unity of both S.-and-N.Korea. I don't want to see another war waged between the two. There's been enough bloodshed. But if S.Korea and the U.S. continue to give off aggression against N.Korea and actually try and attack them, then you're fucking right I'll support the North!

So which is it? Are the DPRK surrounded on all sides by powerful evil imperialists breathing down their neck waiting to pounce at the right opportunity or is that "myth destroyed", as you claim above?

Maybe now they can divert some of the funds from military spending to, you know, feed people?
