I've seen a few E. European films (somewhat) recently that have left lasting impressions on me, including My Joy (from the Ukraine), A Serbian Film & Life And Death Of A Porno Gang (also from Serbia). My Joy was a haunting film dealing w/ issues related to the stagnation and decay of Ukraine, especially corruption, while A Serbian Film dealt with these issues as well, only in a crazy, absurdist fashion, and the setting was Serbia, not Ukraine. Life And Death Of A Porno Gang was a more somber, dark reflection on Serbia, portraying it as a nation suffocated by both the reactionary backwardness of the countryside and the disgusting corruption of authority figures. It wasn't that great, but it had it's moments.
Anyway, does anyone else know of any good films from this general area of Europe? (Please don't recommend Come And See)

I'm not a huge fan of cinematography, but I'd definitely recommend a 90s Croatian movie "Fine Dead Girls" (Fine mrtve djevojke) which traces the life of a lesbian couple.
The movie is grim in a specific ways, but also tinged with doses of humor.

Lepa Sela Lepo Gore is supposed to be good. i haven't seen it myself, but it's been recommended to me, and if Bandito recommends it as well then it must be pretty good.
Checkout Točkovi and Šišanje, two very good (imo) Serbian films. i'm sure you'll be able to find english subs for both.

I found about this film a while ago from 1967 called "Closely Watched Trains" (Ostre Sledovane Vlaky), which is Czech-German (not part of the Balkan states, but the movie seems pretty interesting). It is one of the most prominent films to come out of the Czech New Wave and I'm pretty sure it won an oscar for best foreign film. I have never been able to find it online anywhere, so if anyone knows where to find it, post in this thread

Though its not from Europe, i would suggest checking this Armenian film out.
"Vodka Lemon (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379577/)"
8dHI2d4ftF4
i believe its available on Netflix with english subtitles.
Basically, its about the life of a few families, one in particular, in an extremely impoverished armenian village post-USSR.
