Hmm, dunno about amazing. A lot of people find them quite patronising. Can't think of anything original or subversive in his films and I've seen a few. I did like Family Life however. Quite dark and depressing and think many of the 'values' in the film are alive and well. I certainly could relate to the film decades after its release, sadly.

patronizing? how so? I haven't viewed all of his films so I can't really say..

What I have seen, I love and think it's original and revolutionary--- Land and Freedom, Bread and Roses, the Wind that Shakes the Barley, Carla's song....

I loved The Wind That Shakes the Barley and Land and Freedom. Have you seen The Big Flame?

It's great, it's on youtube - you should check it out. It's about dockworkers in the UK who suddenly decide to take over and occupy the docks and run things themselves. It's the first film I saw by Loach.

Kes atones for the tedium of all his other films. Land and Freedom's good, but they're all the same. But he lays it on a bit thick, and when a Marxist is anaesthetising himself against the vulgar sensitivity, you can't call him a good film maker.

The Wind That Shakes the Barley is garbage, preachy banal bullshit.
