I was thinking of starting a Minecraft server where we make a democratic society, ran with Socialistic principles.

We could add several mods to enhance the economic aspects of the game.

Anyone wish to help or have an idea to add?

I can have a running server in one days time.

Can somebody explain to me what Minecraft is? I've read the wiki page and been on its website and watched videos but I don't get it

Oh ok...haha that's what it looked like but I thought I was missing some deeper meaning. It looks cool but I already bought four games in the past month so I guess I'll check it out some other time

Minecraft is basically a world made up of cubes, you extract different type of cubes and use them to build stuff (think Legos). There are monsters but you can play in peaceful mode and just concentrated on building (yet lava, water and falling from great heights are still a threat).

Most people are attracted to the building side of Minecraft as the combat is very crude and like to learn how to engineer within the rules of Minecraft, when you become a Minecraft guru you can make really advanced stuff like ALUs.

Iconomy, World Edit, stuff like that. I'd like the server to be focused around economics more than anything.

By what measure is minecraft so capitalist that it demands a 'socialist' version?

A socialist version of for example, sim city i could understand because things like crimes spawn randomly and arbitrarily regardless of material factors.

Now that is a mod I want to see.

Capitalism doesn't exist in Minecraft as Minecraft only simulates production, to build a 16-bit ALU you just need to build it (you can even spawn the resources you need if don't want to mine for it, this is done on creative servers). Speaking of which if you look at most creative servers you have land registry systems that include building codes as people quickly found out they don't just want to have someone build a 50ft cock statue next to their house and the better creative servers aim for a overall theme and style.

Ive started several Survival servers, one which was ran in a capitalist sort if way, where players could buy space in which to either live in, rent out, or start a shop that specialized in a certain area, weapons, armor, tools, raw materials, etc.

Im talking about making a server in which person takes on a role in a cuboid digital society, to replicate a town, and eventually another town, until a community develops.

They don't actually spring regardless of material factors, but they sure represent a bourgeois representation thereof; i.e., low-wealth housing = higher chance for crime, and certain buildings encourage crime, universities and so on. The class divisions are pretty sharp in the game (I like to set the two upper class levels taxes at 20% (sure are low) to make sure they never come to the city. It would have been nice with a more complex economy though.

Some liberals tend to be bothered by the fact that the city has to administer free health care though and say it's a socialist game.

A socialist minecraft rp would be awesome. Maybe not so much rp as long as it focuses on socialism. I would like to see if we can get a good gift economy going.

I've been thinking a lot about historical materialism and the development of "societies" in Minecraft. Basically, it's impossible for anyone or any group (assuming control of the server) to monopolize control over the social surplus, so it's impossible to have a class society develop. Minecraft societies are basically forever primitive communist societies, of a sort.

I want to make factories and forges, with connecting rail systems, supply depots, warehouses, etc to replicate actual modes of production.

- Factories for Coal, Cobblestone, Smooth stone.

- Workshops for tools weapons and armors,

- Raw material gatherers

- Builders

- And maybe a Standing army to protect from the monsters.

Sounds good to me. I would primarily be a miner as that is what I spend most my time in minecraft doing as it is.

I'd def be a builder. That pretty much all I do in that game. (not that I'm particularly good) Since I've bought it, I devoted all my play time to world 1 built a full on castle (takes up a large island in the center of the bay near my spawn point), Greco-Roman Temple, a smaller mountain top temple, Lighthouse, Underwater farm, a Country house with hidden well vault, Two under ground bases (the secret one is hidden inside the obvious one.) and a moutian top fortress. Not to metion a volcano and a couple other houses and towers.

Would try and run it on my desktop as I think it might be able to handle it, but my bandwidth is complete shit at my parents house.

I've been playing minecraft for a long time, this could be really cool, but I see some issues...

A socialist server could be a great idea, but really, how can it work in a meaningful way? To have working class rule you need a working class. Who wants to play a worker in their spare time?

miners, builders, sure, but that doesn't exactly make an economy run.

I guess you could increase the value of farming by increasing the need for food.

multiple small towns working on concert, might be the way to go, not sure how well it'd work out without somewhat centralized planning.

I'm up for this.

At the risk of sounding like a Menshevik () I'd almost suggest we establish a capitalist economy with multiple towns, and then have a "revolution" where we convert it over to socialism. I think the transition itself could be an interesting experiment.

In any case I think we should do it as a Survival Multiplayer map. The risk of death at the hands of monsters will create a real need for things like food and shelter beyond simply wanting to have it.

Yes, sectarian civil war sounds fun! We should make it an SMP map on hard with some extra mods to make sure it is a real challenge fighting off monsters. Also, we should add mods so we can industrialize and do other cool setting appropriate shit. I'm already looking into multiplayer mods that could be implemented on the current version.

Would make the game harder, but might be annoying to some.

Great for a police state!

If no one can host a server we can always make a community on a nice public server I guess.

There are a few mods that also create Rail systems that have minecart automation, i.e where powered minecarts that pass over a certain storage unit will pick up or dropp off a specific material from it, creating easy supply trains for factories, or inter town trade.

A lot more tedious and less creative than minecraft, but a good sandbox game with permadeath. Rusty and I played a while back, but I had to quit due to college shit. >.>

I don't understand why a minecraft server would need democratic decision making ... I mean is it really that difficult to build what you want out of the way of other people (or if you want to get together to build a town, then you can build roads around your buildings later), it is an ever expanding game afterall

This does look interesting though ... :D
I use hamachi, can I get the Network ID and password sent to me plz?

Tablo
19th June 2011, 05:43
Well, the whole democratic decision making makes it fun and creates a sort of community atmosphere. Better than everyone running off and playing ssp on a smp map.. :P

still waiting on the server... guess I will play some adventure maps.
