...Yeah,I got the position today.
I'm at the very lowest position right now, informally known as a "Goffer" where I just fetch stuff for other guys while I'm learning the ropes.I have my first training session tonight.
Pretty cool, right? :)

The volunteer positions prevent full time employment positions?

I was under the impression that they were used to compensate for the fact that fully time positions are not considered financially feasible, which is quite possible true of much of Maine. It's not really scabbing if nobody was actually going to job in the first place.

No, if one wished they could move onto full time employment after so long.Really the only difference between volunteer and full time is that those who volunteer are at the various incident's when they are able to partake, unlike the full timers who are obligated to be there.
The job doesn't pay well. Each firefighter in my area gets paid one lump sum of money near the start of December. This sum can be as high as $2000. This is your pay for the entire year. Needless to say this isn't a living wage.

So do you get to at least ride around on the firetrucks? If I were you, I would demand that be apart of my contract or whatever, and also include it as my personal get around vehicle, without me having to worry about gassing it up.

That is correct. There is no pay differences between volunteer and full-time personal.Everyone gets the same amount of money in their one lump sum.
And yes, during calls and training assignments I get to ride around in a fire truck....but unfortunately I cannot use it as my own personal vehicle.lol

What is your unit's focus? Are you primarily structure or mutual aid wildland? Maine seems to be the most heavily forested eastern state. Just remember your standard orders when heading up the line in defense of Weyerhauser assets.

Not a specific focus, just all around work ranging from forest fires, structure fires, motor vehicle accidents, and really anything else that needs to get done around town that involves our assistance.I live in a rather small part of Maine (i.e not very heavily populated),so I don't foresee any of these events happening too often. If they did, a very real possibility, than it wouldn't involve me immediately since I am still at the very lowest position and am learning all the basics. The next Firefighter1 course doesn't start for a little while more, but when it does I will be gradually moving up.

and at the same time, starting police officers in the Bay Area make 100gs a year. what the fuck!

Yeah, 2g's given to each of the dozen (or so) firefighters at the start of December equals not a whole lot.
I'm sure the small pay has to do with my area being such a small locale.
Hardly matters to me though since I am doing this for the life experience.
