does anybody here know much about cars? i am having trouble with (i think) my starter. it used to be every once in awhile it wouldn't go and you'd bump it a little and it'd start. now in the last five days or so its gone from that to about every third time it won't start to where now it won't start, or it takes like 30 tries. is there any way i can do something about this without going to the shop? i'm broke...

I'll admit that I don't know much about cars and repairs, but it sounds like you're going to need to replace the part. I suggest you go to a scrap yard and ask around, by the part on your own, then get a mechanic to replace it at low cost.

i took it in, could be any number of problems with the starter so we'll see, hopefully won't be too expensive but probably will be at least 300 bucks.. fuck:cursing:

You should probably try to change the sparks first, and then get it to a mechanic who will most probably rip you off.He will change the sparks anyway, even if nothing is wrong with them its the first thing mechanics always change(at least down here), some times even for no reason:rolleyes: but you do need "good" sparks to fire your engine afaik.

This happened three or four months ago to me. The car battery would hold a charge fine, start, everything just fine for them but once I took it back home and nighttime came along it would die. Nothing to do with cold weather. Nothing to do with radio being installed incorrectly or the alternator having to be fixed- the trunk wasn't closing correctly from an accident/repair a year ago and the light bulb I had taken out was put back in it by a roommate or friend. That's all it took- removing the bulb and yelling at friends/roommates.

What kind of vehicle you got there? I mean, aside from a broken one, *snap*.

1. How old is your battery?

2. It could be like Mari3L said, and in fact could be cold weather fucking with the starter. If that's the case, it's best to always start it up let it run for a couple minutes and then take it for a drive just a few blocks or whatever, so the engine heats up properly and the battery gets properly energized to do it thing.)

Also, I advise anyone who might have trouble with starting up their car in the morning when it's even just a cool morning, or a cool night, to not just start and shut off your car on a short little trip/errand, and if you do, before you go home or whatever, take it for a bit of a spin and let the engine warm up so it doesn't freak anymore. You can save yourself a lot of money doing this, because most of the time when someone brings their car/truck into the shop I work at, and they say their problem is possibly the starter, that's what their problem is.

3. Without hearing it or seeing it myself, it's kind of hard to gauge exactly on here what it could be. Anymore info you've got bcbm, might help me narrow it down, and maybe what the other mechanic(s) told you already.
