Online campaigns work - just ask Rosalba

Rosalba is free thanks to you. Now let's help Atilio and Valentin.

Last November, we asked you to send emails demanding that Colombia release Rosalba Gaviria Toro (above, left), a member of the agricultural workers' union who was jailed for her trade union work.

This week, we received great news: Rosalba is free.

More than 3,000 of you sent emails and the Colombian government finally listened. She was absolved of all charges and then released from prison.

This week, we were forced to launch two more campaigns in defense of jailed trade unionists:

In Russia, we're campaigning to free Valentin Urusov (above, right), the union leader at ALROSA, the world's second largest diamond mining company, who is serving five years in prison for a fabricated offence -- after leading a strike and recruiting over 1,000 workers in the remote town of Udachnyi in Yakutiya to a union to protest inhumane working conditions and low wages.
In El Salvador, we're campaigning for the release of Atilio Jaimes Pérez (above, center), secretary general of SELSA, the worksite union at Lido, S.A., who has been jailed on false pretenses in retaliation for leading a strike.

Please take a minute and send off your messages of protest. And then forward on this message to friends, colleagues and fellow union members.

In addition, we're calling on you to support Amnesty International's campaign in defense of jailed leaders of the Tehran bus workers. As we've told you, Mansour Osanloo has been freed - but his colleagues, Reza Shahabi and Ebrahim Maddadi, remain in custody.

Trade unionists around the world face threats of prison and murder every day. And the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) every year produces a report that makes for chiilling reading. This year, it reports on 90 murders of trade unionists -- more than half of these in Colombia. I strongly recommend that you have a look at it.

Finally, on a somewhat lighter note, U.S. labour education publisher Union Communication Services is offering $2,500 in cash prizes in a contest challenging entrants to illustrate the theme "Unions Now, More Than Ever". Prizes will be awarded in three categories: video, graphic/cartoon and song. For complete rules write to [email protected]

Thanks for your support.
