Luís Henrique

It's like a sort of Hegelian triad. Rape apologism - support for genital mutilation of rapists - Stalinism. The apparent contradiction between rape apologism and genital mutilation is overcome in a way that preserves the essences of both thesis and antithesis. The product of the Aufhebung is Stalinism.

Yes, and, despite the mocking tone of my last post, I'm actually not surprised or amused by the fact that Stalinists manage to apologize for rape on the one hand and support vigilante mutilation on the other. Their entire political discourse is underpinned by a fetishization of violence and domination. Whilst I think that there are other leftists who hold views that are different from my own and extremely problematic (for example, Anarchists, who I find to be theoretically impoverished in crucial respects) I can still recognize them as members of the same political tradition as myself in that they too exhibit a commitment to an emancipatory society, whereas, with Stalinists, I cannot detect this basic commitment - the imagery and language of Stalinist states and organizations have no sense of human sensibility and community being enhanced in a different society, no sense of human beings becoming softer and kinder towards their fellows, there is only violence, hatred, and the eternal identification of enemies in order that they might be made to suffer and be destroyed.

I'll be totally honest in a way I'm usually not; while I consider myself slightly more Marxist-Leninist than anything else (only slightly) I do get seriously disgusted and off-put by the general tough guy attitude and apparent bloodthirstiness of a lot of Stalinists. Not everyone, just a lot.

At the same time though, you know what I've begun to note as a seriously common thread of all leftist factions? The general tendency to dehumanize and ascribe the very worst possible characteristics to everyone else. I've participated in it myself, I'll admit, but it's getting wearying. I find it astounding that so many people who are supposed to be on the same side of the political question, on the Left, supporting the idea of socialism, supporting the theories of the SAME philosopher, Karl Marx, we still find ways to hate one another more than we seem to hate capitalists. There's almost no willingness, on any side, to extend anyone any benefit of the doubt that we all generally want to see a better, more just world, even if we disagree on how to bring it about.

The inability to get any kind of consensus on these issues quite frankly undermines, on a daily basis, my confidence in the feasibility of world Marxist revolution.

hmm this thread seems to have taken a more serious turn. So in line with that,

Yes, and, despite the mocking tone of my last post, I'm actually not surprised or amused by the fact that Stalinists manage to apologize for rape on the one hand and support vigilante mutilation on the other. I think it's a bit unfair to lump all the Stalinists in together, even within the OP of the thread i linked too only 2 of those who thanked the post were banned for rape apologism, theres no way to know what the others positions would have been and it's perhaps unreasonable to speculate.
Also there are plenty of Stalinists on the board who have a completely different discourse, some that come to mind are every single member of the NCPN and CJB, the WPNZ stalinists when there were some here and the PSL who i'd deem stalinists today at least from what there members post here.

At least some of the reason a disproportionate amount of Stalinists get banned is because their trolls, it's much easier to fuck around on a forum and get a reaction from people if you say your a Stalinist.

Sasha
14th June 2011, 01:10
i think the CJB/NCPN people here are the exact difference between actual marxist-leninists and stalinists.
its like the difference between eco-anarchists and primmies.
they might be related and i might think they are both wrong but there is an profound difference between them which makes me that i have eco-anarchists under my best friends while every primmie i meet i want to bash their skulls together to see if i can make fire that way.

BTW; the PSL crowd i would more describe as knee-jerk fundamentalist anti-imps than stalinists and are in an related but separate category of their own

Word. Most unreasonable. Everybody here knows I am the exact opposite of a rape apologist.

And yeah what did happen to the WPNZ posters? They were some of the most reasonable people here and they just kind of disappeared:confused:

The PSL, as I understand it, ranges across a wide spectrum of Leninist tendencies. This has both pros and cons; it allows for a large, ideologically diverse movement, but tolerance of less informed lines of Leninist thought also leads to, for instance, their rather unfortunate stance on China.

I don't think that is true. I feel like, in many ways, the forum is being run well by dedicated older members that really know what they are doing. Not to say they haven't made poor decisions in the past. I think the drop in quality has been the loss of some good longtime members over the past year.

I was thinking it might be a good thing if admins served fixed terms say like 9 months. I don't know how many there are at the moment but say if there's 10 and 10 mods and then another 10 CU's who could be trusted to be mods you could have a round robin type system to prevent anyone being a mod/admin for too long. From what I've heard from ex admins is that occasionally they suffer a bit of fatigue from having there inboxs filled with people moaning, etc. Making them take a break every now and then might help them to do their job better.

Well-liked members come and go. Sometimes they go at their accord, and sometimes they have to be shown the door. It's been like this for years, and it's common on any forum with a lot of participants. I've seen a lot of members I liked (and didn't like) go one of these two ways. It's inevitable, as is the associated whining about the forum being worse than it was. Trolls become well-liked because they're amusing or seemingly bold. Demagogues get well-liked because they act like trolls. And everyone appears to like a member with a martyr complex.

If people don't like it here in our little reading room and discussion hall, there is nothing holding you back from going somewhere else. All we as admins and moderators ask of you is that, in exchange for the privilege of being here, you follow the rules. That's all. Those rules are a result of years of practical experience on this forum, not administrative fiat, and should be recognized as such.

Also, if you think the level of discussion has gone down, then raise it yourself. Spend more time in the other forums writing poignant shit instead of making threads in Chit-Chat complaining about the quality of the other forums. You all don't need a theoretical "Moses" (read: demagogue) to make your discussions better, do you?
