I have an ethical question I'd like to ask.

Suppose you work for a store or factory and you work really hard.

Then, one day you get a pink slip.

You are driving by one day and see your old boss passed out on his lawn having a heart attack. Are you morally obligated to stop and help him?

He cared nothing for you. He laid you off and cut your livelhood away from you and your loved ones. The man could have cut his, managements, and every other workers wages a little bit and use that to pay those he laid off but he didn't. So why should I give a fuck about him?

I would stand next to him and read to him the Communist Manifesto while he died slowly and painfuly.

Actulay, I would help him out.

Of course you should be obligated to save him, if you have morals. The mere fact that a human is dying and you could possibly help should be insentive enough. Do you think you would want him to save your life? Anyway the question is why did you get fired from your job. Out of all the employees they only let some go. Do they have methods of evaluating who gets fired? If they run in a standardized country they do. So maybee it wasnt your fault to be fired but it was your turn. Im sure something else will turn up, but you have to save someones life.

We were bringing this hypothetical situation up at work.

One of the older women had a niece that found herself in this situation when living in Japan. She was laid off and found her former supervisor on the side of the road having a heart attack, or at least she heard later. I don't know what the lady chose to do---had to go back to work and didn't finish listening.

It just got me wondering.

It seems to me 1. if she got fired, why can't she empower herself to not have to accept it in her own mind though she may not be able to do anything legally and physically about it---I'm thinking that there might have been "other" reasons for the firing an not what the official reason was. Perhaps her supervisor just didn't like her personally. 2. If she was just laid off, why is it cruel of her to let the guy die, yet not cruel of him to take away her livelhood? Yeah, he may not have been able to do anything about it blah, blah but why should she ACCEPT that as an excuse, really?

I don't know how you could tell someone was dying from the window of a passing car...

But not only would I pass by, it would "make my day". :D

I'd tell all my friends, "Hey, remember that bastard I told you about where I used to work? I actually got to see the sonofa***** croak today!"

Fuck 'em all!

I would call for an ambulance, and patiently wait for it to arrive.

From across the street.

Every people are equal and no matter how he treats me, I would do my best to save him. He may take you back to work. And give you a wage increase. Or he may just say thanks and continue normally. Well, it doesn't matter to me. I think everyone's life is equally precious.

I think everyone's life is equally precious.

I agree. Life is indeed dear to all of us.

But I hate cruel bosses.

And anyway, I did call for an ambulance.

This is not entirely a question of morality. It is also a question of whether or not you'd sleep well that evening, this in actual fact is a question of altruism vs egoism,a segmemt of morality in itself. The fact, that you would call for an ambulence out of the goodness of your heart or simply because you don't want the guilt is purely unfalsifiable. Therefore your actions could either be altruistic or egoistic and have nothing at all to do with the mumbo-jumbo of the preciousness of human life

I would steal his wallet first, then leave...

Nah I would probably help the poor sonofa*****, but tell him that he owed me his life and to give me my job back.

I'd help the guy out. Even though I despise people like that, they are people, and I believe in mutual compassion for all people, even those that are ignorant or stubborn.
