I'm 16 years old and was close to being diagnosed with "teenage depression" by a drug counselor a year ago before I stopped going because I completed my time required. I always thought I might have it but something happened last night that really fucked with my head.. my mom has apparently been diagnosed with depression and prescribed celexa. Does anyone have any experience with depression? How are these drugs going to affect my mom?

I've never personally known anyone on celexa, so I couldn't say for certain, but I can tell you what elavil (which is in the same family) did to me. I've always been a migraine sufferer, but I got in a car wreck once and had to start seeing a neurologist for concussion after-care. My migraines had gotten completely out of control, so he prescribed elavil because despite the fact that it's designed as an antidepressant, it has the side effect of reduction of migraine intensity/frequency.

Well, long story short, it had me super amped up. It was like I was on a caffeine high all day. I wasn't out of control, mind you, but it made it really hard for me to sleep at night. One of the concussion's after effects was constant insomnia, so combine this with a constant caffeine high-like state and you have a recipe for disaster. Y'know, since one of the primary causes of migraines besides stress and high blood pressure is sleep deprivation... So in my case, it turned out to be counterproductive.

I know in some cases, other antidepressants (like prozac) can encourage psychosis, but that's only if you're already prone to that sort of thing. All in all, though, from what I understand most of the side effects from antidepressants are pretty mild in adults.

My brother (who is 19) is severly depressed, and has been a few years, for various reasons and he tried to commit suicide a few months ago. He was in the town mental health unit at the hospital for a week and then he said he was ok to go. For a couple weeks he was fine but he has recently slumped back into it. He doesn't ever talk about his problems so try to find someone to talk to. I don't know if that will help but it's worth a shot. Feel better comrade.
